SEATTLE - Back home and looking to build on a three-match win streak, the Huskies welcome in 21st-ranked Utah, and a Colorado squad ranked just outside the top-25. As a number of upsets last week proved, every match in the Pac-12 this season is up for grabs, and UW, at 4-2 in league play so far, will try to get a leg up on the 4-2 Utes this Friday, Oct. 14, when the match gets underway at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, the Buffaloes (10-6, 2-4 Pac-12) present another big challenge in a match starting at 3:00 p.m.
Friday's match will be televised live on Pac-12 Washington and Pac-12 Mountain, while Sunday's match will be live streamed on GoHuskies.com.
Washington earned two big road wins last weekend at then-No. 20 Oregon and Oregon State to get into a tie for third in the Pac-12 race, one game behind Oregon and Washington State. Courtney Schwan was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for the first time on Monday, as she averaged 5.00 kills per set and hit .338 over the two wins. Libero Shayne McPherson had 22 digs against Oregon in just three sets, and 21 more against OSU, and was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, also a first for her.
The Utes are coming off a huge upset, taking down then-No. 7 Stanford in Palo Alto for the first time in program history last Sunday, and jumping into the top-25 as a result. Utah has actually won its past three road matches against ranked teams, upsetting then-No. 16 Colorado on Sept. 21, and stunning then-No. 9 BYU in five sets on Sept. 15. Utah is 13-4 overall, with its two Pac-12 losses coming against UCLA and USC at home. In conference matches, Utah is hitting .225 and holding opponents to .200. The Utes are a strong serving team, ranking third in Pac-12 play with 1.04 aces per set, and rank fifth in blocks at 2.44. Junior Adora Anae is the most productive hitter in the Pac-12 at this point, averaging 4.76 kills per set on the year and 5.48 points, including a 0.39 aces per set average that ranks third in the league. Tawnee Luafalemana is fifth in the Pac-12 with a .377 attack percentage, and she was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week this week. She hit .476 with 11 kills against the Cardinal, while Anae had 20 kills, four aces, and 15 digs.
Colorado has been ranked for much of the season but is currently in the receiving votes category, 27th overall in voting points. The Buffs had two huge nonconference wins at home over then-No. 13 Penn State and then-No. 17 Illinois on back to back nights. In conference, Colorado has a win over then-No. 12 UCLA and Arizona to its credit, but lost both matches last weekend in the Bay Area to Stanford and Cal, both in four sets. In conference matches, Colorado has hit .191 with opponents hitting .218. Joslyn Hayes has been effective with 2.55 kills per set hitting .296 in conference play, while Gabby Simpson averages 2.96 kills and Alexa Smith also has 2.88 per set. Simpson leads in kills while also setting half the time in a 6-2, averaging 5.58 assists per set. Her sister, Cierra Simpson, is the team's libero and averages 3.57 digs overall and 4.19 in Pac-12 play. Former Husky Evan Sanders, a 2011 letterwinner, is an assistant coach at Colorado on first year head coach Jesse Mahoney's staff.
