FULLERTON, Calif.- The sixth-ranked Washington softball team 24-7 split a pair of games in its final day of spring break action in California. The Huskies defeated 25th-ranked Northwestern 7-6 in eight innings, before falling to Cal State Fullerton 11-2 in the closer.
The Huskies used a RBI single by Kathy Fiske in the bottom of the eight to knot the score at 6-6 before freshman Robyn Wike singled up the middle to score Kristen Rivera to win the game against NU, 7-6.
The Wildcats had taken the early 4-0 lead but the Huskies scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to regain the lead. UW put runners on second on third with no outs with a hit batsman and a Northwestern error. Dominique Lastrapes then singled home Wike with a shot to right field and Rita Roach scored on a double by Aimee Minor. Sarah Hyatt then blasted her sixth home run of the year over the left field fence to score three and give Washington the 5-4 advantage.
NU scored a run in the fifth when Erin Mobley reached base on an error and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and stolen base. Eryn Manahan then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Mobley and knot the score at 5-5.
Neither team could plate a runner in the sixth and seventh, forcing the game into extra-innings using the international tiebreaker where a runner is placed on second base to start the inning.
Northwestern capitalized in the top of the eight, scoring Kristen Amegin on a Husky fielding error.
Washington battled back in the bottom half of the inning with RBIs by Fiske and Wike to earn the 7-6 victory.
Junior Ashley Boek (15-3) picked up the win for Washington as she scattered five hits and struck out two. Eileen Canny (7-4) took the loss as she gave up five runs in two innings of work.
Cal State Fullerton (11-19) capitalized on a depleted Husky pitching staff in the nightcap, routing Washington 11-2.
UW stuck first as Dena Tyson hit a flare that landed just fair down the right field line, to score Minor for the 1-0 lead.
The Titans answered back with four runs in the bottom of the inning with a little help from the Huskies' defense. Fullerton loaded the bases with one out thanks to an infield single by Julie Watson and a pair of walks. Candice Baker then sent the full-count pitch from Boek back up the middle that was misplayed by the Washington centerfielder and allowed to roll all the way to the fence, clearing the bases and giving Fullerton the 4-1 advantage.
Cal State Fullerton then broke it wide open with a seven-run fourth inning after shortstop Amanda Oleson came in to pitch for the tapped Huskies pitching staff.
Boek (15-4), who started the first game against the Wildcats, lasted only 1/3 of an inning in the start against the Titans, and Tia Bollinger, who has been sidelined for three weeks due to a shoulder injury leading up to last week's Kia Klassic, were the first two Washington hurlers.
Lindsey Bashor and Tiffany Hoff hit back-to-back home runs in the inning to close out a stretch of six-consecutive run-scoring hits by the Titans.
There was no quit in the Huskies, though, loading the bases in the fifth thanks to three-straight singles to right field with no outs. After a strikeout, Rivera singled through the right side, driving home Courtney Jeffries for the final score of the game.
Weekley then induced Tyson to line into a double play to end the game.
The Huskies return home from their 10-day California tour for a few days rest before heading out to Arizona to start the Pac-10 season. Washington opens conference action at No. 1 Arizona on April 2 before playing a pair at Arizona State on April 3 and 4.
