SEATTLE - Senior guard Giuliana Mendiola set UW's career mark for assists, and climbed to fifth all-time in scoring, but a late comeback lifted UCLA to a 64-59 win before 3,883 at Bank of America Arena.
Mendiola's game-high 27 points moved the senior past Loree Payne and Yvette Cole into fifth on the UW's all-time scoring list with 1,684 points. Unfortunately, Mendiola's hot hand could not overcome the Huskies' poor shooting. Washington (12-9, 5-7) shot just 32 percent from the field, but kept the game close with outstanding defense, limiting UCLA (11-10, 6-6) to 38 percent from the field while forcing 16 Bruin turnovers.
After the Huskies fell behind, 45-42, with just under eight minutes to play, Mendiola took the game into her hands, first assisting on an Andrea Lalum three-pointer to tie the game and move past Leteia Hughley into first all-time on Washington's career assists chart.
The assist sparked a 10-0 Husky run, with Mendiola adding five of the 10, to lift Washington seven points ahead, at 52-45, with 4:43 to play. After the two teams swapped a pair of quick baskets, however, the Bruins put the clamps on the Husky attack, running off 12 consecutive points to take a 59-54 lead they would not relinquish.
In all, UCLA closed the game on a 17-5 run, holding the Huskies to just one basket - a desperation three by Mendiola with 11 seconds remaining - in the last 3:55 of the contest.
UCLA freshman Noelle Quinn led all Bruins in scoring and rebounding for the second-straight game with 25 points and 11 boards for her third-consecutive double-double.
The Huskies welcome USC to Bank of America on Saturday at 1 p.m., before heading to Oregon next weekend for games Thursday against Oregon, and Saturday at Oregon State.
