- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Bringing a wealth of experience at junior, professional, and national team levels, Alessandro Lodi begins his first season as a volunteer assistant for Washington. A native of Italy, Lodi has coached all over Europe along with learning from a number of top U.S. coaches.
Lodi began his coaching career in 1997 in Italy, and his first professional position came as an assistant for an Italian women's second division team from 2000 to 2002. He served as head coach for a number of men's and women's teams in Italy and Switzerland, winning a total of six junior regional titles. He also led a second-division Swiss team to the playoffs and promotion into the first division in 2011 and 2012.
Owning an extensive strength and conditioning background, in 2012 Lodi worked as an assistant coach and strength coach in the Polish women's first division, and in 2013 he was a head coach and strength coach back in the Swiss first division. He served as volunteer assistant for the Swiss men's national team from 2011-12, working with Carl McGown, a mentor for Husky Head Coach Jim McLaughlin.
Recently, Lodi spent extensive time in the U.S. Women's National Team gym gaining experience from Head Coach Karch Kiraly. Lodi was part of the U.S. National Team staff for the 2014 Montreux Volley Masters Tournament, serving as a consultant coach, as the Americans took silver.
Lodi graduated from the University of Parma in 2000 and then returned for a PhD in ancient philosophy in 2004. He taught Sociology of Sport and Didactics of Sport at the University of Basel from 2006-10 while directing the physical education teacher education curriculum. Lodi is a clinician for the Italian Association of Volleyball Strength & Conditioning Coaches.
"I had the great privilege to be mentored by Carl McGown and to coach Courtney Thompson. If you know Carl and Courtney, sooner rather than later you want to visit UW and Jim McLaughlin," said Lodi. "From the first time I came, in 2012, this program has become my favorite place and Jim is not only one of the very best masters of the game I know, but also a true friend. Thus, the opportunity to coach here is beyond exciting. I will do everything I can to help Husky Volleyball.”
