January 28, 2026 | Women's Basketball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The No. 25 Washington women's basketball team showed exceptional resilience and fight to earn its second ranked win of the season in an 83-80 double overtime victory against No. 16 Maryland.
Wednesday night marked the fifth straight conference win for the Huskies, the longest streak for the program since 2016-17.
The Huskies were exceptional defensively, holding Maryland to its lowest point total in regulation this season with 59 points. UW was especially effective on the offensive glass, pulling down 20 offensive rebounds — which it turned into 24 second-chance points.
Washington had three players finish in double figures, with Sayvia Sellers leading the way with a career-high 38 points. She helped lead the charge for the Huskies, scoring 34 of her points in the second half and overtime. Avery Howell was effective as well, notching a double-double against the Terrapins with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Howell led the Dawgs with a career-high five steals, while McGaughy pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to tie for the team lead. Sayvia Sellers led Washington with six assists.
Elle Ladine, who had 10 points and three rebounds, hit one of the biggest shots of the night for the Huskies, knocking down a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 59 points.
That wasn't the only clutch shot of the evening for Washington, with Sellers responding late in the first overtime period with a lay-up through traffic with four seconds remaining.
In the second overtime period, the Huskies remained poised, making six shots from the free throw line in the final minutes to seal the win.
In doing so, Washington mounted a 13-point comeback to take down Maryland. Washington recorded a 10-0 run in the third quarter to pull the game within single digits — a run capped off by a 3-pointer from Howell in the corner.
Washington forced 14 Maryland turnovers, nine of which came by way of the steal.
Up next, Washington returns home to Seattle, where the Huskies will take on Illinois at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1 at Alaska Airlines Arena. The game will air on FS1.
