
No. 25 Washington Closes Homestand With Win Against Penn State

SEATTLE — The No. 25 Washington women's basketball team collected its 12th win at home on Wednesday, as the Huskies took down Penn State, 81-65, in Alaska Airlines Arena.
UW continued to dominate down low, recording 48 paint points and outrebounding the Nittany Lions 49 to 29. The rebounding margin of plus 20 was UW's third-largest of the season. Penn State's 29 rebounds were its third-lowest of the 2025-26 campaign.
Washington was stout defensively, with Wednesday marking the fifth conference opponent it has held to 65 points or less this season.
On a night when she recorded her fourth double-double of the season, sophomore Avery Howell racked up a number of individual accolades. The Boise, Idaho native knocked down a pair of free throws early in the third quarter to pick up her 500th career point, and later that frame, collected her 250th career rebound. The guard finished with a team-leading three 3-pointers en route to 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Sayvia Sellers led all scorers with 24 points, the third time in the last four games she's finished with 20 or more points. She was efficient from the field, knocking down 10 of her 15 shots while dishing out three assists and collecting three rebounds.
Brynn McGaughy knocked down the first six shots she took Wednesday to finish with 14 points. She came up just shy of a double-double of her own, pulling down nine rebounds.
Devin Coppinger hit two big 3-pointers for the Huskies, one in the third quarter and another in the fourth, in her nine-point performance. The sophomore also added five rebounds of her own.
The victory pushes Washington's home record to 12-1 to open the 2025-26 season. The Huskies are currently on pace for their best home winning percentage since the 2016-17 campaign.
UW broke the game open in the third quarter, with Washington using a 12-3 run over the next four and a half minutes to stretch the lead to 60-49. The Huskies continued to build their lead in the fourth, outscoring the Nittany Lions 21-14 in the final frame.
Washington heads back out on the road on Sunday, as the Huskies travel to Jersey Mike's Arena in Piscataway, New Jersey, to play Rutgers. Tipoff against the Scarlet Knights is set for 11:00 a.m. PT and streams live in B1G+.
