No. 1 UW Men Hold Off Kiwis To Win Windermere Cup
May 03, 2025 | Men's Rowing

Thousands lined the race course, aboard boats tied to the log boom, across the draw-span of the Montlake Bridge and along both sides of the Cut, as the UW men and women wrapped up their home and regular seasons with wins in all 11 collegiate races, including the featured Windermere Cup events.
For the men, it was the Huskies' 29th win in the Windermere Cup in 38 attempts. In 2015, the most recent of three prior trips to the event, New Zealand beat the UW, which went on to win the national championship that spring.
Saturday, the Kiwis provided a solid challenge, keeping contact with the Huskies for the entire 2,000 meters. Washington had stretched its lead to nearly a full length as the crews entered the Cut, 600-some meters from the finish line, but the visitors made a move that forced a response from the Huskies.

As they crossed the finish line, Washington won by half a boat length and about 1.4 seconds, with a time of 5:30.139 to the Kiwis' 5:31.576.
"I was pleased to see we performed so well today considering the close Dual race last week against California," said Michael Callahan, the UW men's head coach. "New Zealand is a top competitor and gave us a top-notch race today. The varsity had a very well executed race and showed better speed in the middle 1,000 this week."
"I'm really impressed with how the guys in my boat handled the pressure," said UW varsity coxswain Nick Dunlop. "The Kiwis did a really good job not giving us an easy task, so I'm really proud of how we handled today. It was another gritty win."
Washington's crew included three oarsmen from New Zealand: Ben Shortt, Harry Fitzpatrick and Logan Ullrich, who won a silver medal in the four at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Earlier in the regatta, Washington's second varsity eight bested Gonzaga for the Erickson Cascade Cup.
Washington also had the top-two finishers in the third varsity eights/freshman eights event, with the 3V8 beating the newcomers. In the men's four, Washington had three entries, which finished first through third, ahead of a four from Seattle University.
Next for the UW men is the inaugural Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championship, the weekend after next at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. Two weeks later, the Huskies defend their national title at the IRA Regatta on the Cooper River in New Jersey.
"It's super helpful to have really strong competition here in the Cut," noted Dunlop, the varsity cox, "and it's nice to do it in front of a big, home crowd as well. We'll take what we learned today into MPSFs and IRAs."

"A race like that will only strengthen and prepare us for the conference championships in two weeks," Callahan added. "The whole team top to bottom was outstanding today, and it was an amazing atmosphere on the Cut. I haven't seen that many people so energetic in years! It's so amazing to see our fans out there. Our students appreciate it more than they can know."
