
Washington To Face Columbia In NCAA First Four Matchup

SEATTLE – For the first time since the 2016-17 season, the Washington women's basketball team will play in the NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies (19-13, 9-9 Big Ten) will face the Columbia Lions (23-6, 13-1 Ivy League) in a First Four matchup at Carmichael Arena on the campus of North Carolina on Thursday, March 20.
Thursday's First Four game will be televised on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. PT with Angel Gray (play-by-play) and Aja Ellison (analyst) announcing.
Jason Dorow and Elise Woodward will call the action for the Dawgs on 950 KJR-AM.
No. 11 seed Washington versus No. 11 seed Columbia will be the third of four First Four tournament games to determine which teams will earn a spot on the round of 64.
The winner of UW/Columbia will advance to the round of 64 to face 6th-seed West Virginia (24-7) on Saturday, March 22 at 11 a.m. PT inside Carmichael Arena.
Thursday will be the first all-time meeting between Washington and Columbia and first ever First Four game for the Dawgs.
HUSKIES IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
Washington holds a 21-19 all-time record at the NCAA Tournament (6-11 at neutral site games).
The last time UW was in the Big Dance was 2017, when the Dawgs exited the tournament in the Sweet Sixteen after a loss to Mississippi State.
In the regular season, the Huskies faced 13 teams that are slotted to play in the 2025 NCAA Tournament, 10 of those being Big Ten opponents. In addition to the 10 other conference opponents set for the Big Dance that UW has played, the Huskies also faced Southern, LSU, and Utah.
LAST TIME OUT – BIG TEN TOURNAMENT
The Huskies concluded their first season as members of the Big Ten with a 9-9 conference record. Nine conference victories is the most by Washington since 2016-17.
Washington earned a B1G first round win over Minnesota before falling to No. 5 seed Michigan in the second round of the conference tournament at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
UW has won five of its last six matchups heading into NCAA action.
Three Huskies earned Big Ten postseason honors, led by Elle Ladine who notched a spot on the All-Big Ten Second Team. Dalayah Daniels and Sayvia Sellers were named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention.
SCOUTING REPORT
Columbia has earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. This season, the Lions earned an at-large berth into the field as outright regular season Ivy League champions. Last year in NCAA play, the Lions fell to Vanderbilt in the First Four 72-68.
The Lions enter tournament play with a 23-6 record overall and 13-1 in league action, with their only conference loss being a 60-54 loss to Harvard.
Their sole other loss to an Ivy opponent was again to Harvard (74-71) in the Ivy League Tournament Championship game.
This is the first time Washington and Columbia have met.
