SEATTLE – The third and final weekend in the Dempsey comes this Friday and Saturday, as the Husky Classic promises to deliver some of the best distance races seen anywhere in the USA. While the UW distance Dawgs look to strengthen their NCAA Indoor bids here at home, most of the sprinters and field event athletes are headed to New Mexico for the Don Kirby Elite Invitational, also held on Friday and Saturday.
The Husky Classic will be streamed on Runnerspace, while the Don Kirby Elite Invite will be streamed via Flotrack.
Action in the Dempsey on Friday starts at 12 noon with several masters and club races. The first NCAA event will be the men's pole vault at 1:30 p.m. and the first race on the track will be the men's DMR invite section at 1:45. That will be followed by the women's DMR invite, as the Huskies will take their first shots at qualifying for nationals in one of their strongest events historically.
Friday evening will also feature a tremendously loaded men's 3k top heat featuring several Dawgs along with 2024 U.S. Olympian Nico Young. That race should go close to 5:30 p.m., and then multiple strong heats of the 5,000-meters will close out day one. Saturday resumes at 10 a.m. and will feature outstanding 800m and mile fields, and the women's 3k invite at 2:15 p.m.
In Albuquerque, on Friday the first Huskies to compete will be the men's pole vaulters at 1 p.m. Pacific and first on the track will be the women's 200m at 1:55 p.m. Saturday the first Husky to compete will be Jonathan Frazier in the 60m hurdles at 9 a.m. PT.
In this week's national rankings, after being idle the previous week, the UW men dropped three spots to No. 7 in the nation, while the Husky women remained at No. 13.
Individual Dawgs currently in NCAA qualifying position (Top-16) include Kyle Reinheimer (6th/800m), Cole Lindhorst (7th/800m), Justin O'Toole (10th/800m), Chloe Foerster (14th/800m and 8th/Mile), Nathan Green (3rd/Mile and 7th/3000m), Ronan McMahon-Staggs (4th/Mile), Amina Maatoug (7th/Mile), Scott Toney (15th/Pole Vault), Hana Moll and Amanda Moll (tied-2nd/Pole Vault), Prestin Artis (16th/Long Jump), and Jami Schlueter (10th/Heptathlon). Several of those Dawgs know they will need to continue to improve their marks to retain their top-16 spots in order to reach nationals.
