Green Wins USA 1,500-Meters Championship

SEATTLE – Washington's men's mile championship era extended to the USA Outdoor Championships for the first time today, as 2025 grad Nathan Green captured his second U.S. title and first outdoors with a victory in the 1,500-meters at Icahn Stadium in New York. Green swept the 2026 American titles at the distance, winning the indoor title back in March as well.
Green won a tactical finale that exploded on the final lap. The 2023 and 2025 NCAA Champion at the distance, Green positioned himself at the front going into the bell lap, and held onto the lead for the entire final 400-meters, just edging out Vincent Ciattei by .05 seconds, 3:50.27 to 3:50.32.
It is the first title ever in the event for a UW grad, which was fitting because the Dawgs had dominated the prelims on Thursday, sending four into today's final. All four Huskies had moments up at the front, but Green was the one that was fastest and strongest in the end. Current Husky Reuben Reina was ninth despite being less than a second behind the winning time, as he crossed in 3:50.99. Former NCAA champs and 2024 grads Luke Houser and Joe Waskom placed sixth (3:50.87 for Houser) and 13th (3:51.99 for Waskom).
Also in action today at USA's was 2024 NCAA silver medalist Chandler Ault in the men's javelin throw. Ault took seventh today, as his opening round throw of 227-3 was his best.
Sunday in New York will feature former Husky James Rhoads in the men's pole vault, and former Huskie Kayle DeLay and Acer Iverson in the women's and men's 5,000-meters. Iverson was fifth in the 10,000-meters final on Thursday.

At the Spanish National Championships today in Malaga, reigning NCAA heptathlon champion Sofia Cosculluela took the silver medal after two days and seven events of competition. Cosculluela finished with 6,019 points in her first competition since winning NCAAs in June.
And also on Saturday, in Albi, France, senior Husky Julia David-Smith earned bronze in the 5,000-meters at the National Championships of France. David-Smith posted a time of 15:48.65 to reach the podium.
Sunday will feature more UW action in Europe, as 2025 NCAA Champion Sophie O'Sullivan runs in the Irish National Championship finals at 1,500-meters, and incoming Husky Saoirse Fitzgerald races in the 800-meter finals.
