Huskies Grab First Big Ten Win Over Buckeyes
October 03, 2025 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – The Husky volleyball team got back into the win column with a much-needed four set victory over Ohio State at Alaska Airlines Arena tonight. Washington hit .363 and had a season-high 15 blocks to deal the Buckeyes a 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19 defeat in front of 2,970 fans.
Washington picked up its first Big Ten win of the season, improving to 1-2 in conference and 6-7 overall. The Dawgs had lost nine sets in a row, all by small margins, but came out in set one at home tonight and hit a scorching .519 to put an end to that run of lost sets.
Ohio State responded in the second set, but UW kept its offensive balance and efficiency in sets three and four, hitting .310 in the third and .370 in the fourth, and the Husky block helped break things open as Washington had six blocks in set four.
"I was proud of the team because they work really hard, and I've seen the pain in their eyes on the road when we've lost and lost close sets. So to see them work hard and see some of the things we worked on (in action) tonight was really exciting," said Head Coach Leslie Gabriel. "We worked on transition this week and getting the quicks and right side more involved, and our quick and setter connection tonight was awesome. Still working on our serve, and we'll get there, but I was proud of how they competed."
Everyone contributed on offense tonight, as sophomore setter Alexis Haury had 47 assists and spread things around. Kierstyn Barton led the way with 16 kills, hitting .306, while Alexa Markley had 12 kills, hitting .370, and Simona Mateska also had 12, hitting .276. Mateska killed her first seven swings in the first set.
The middles were efficient as well. Katy Wessels had a career-high .750 attack percentage, with seven kills on eight swings, and Julia Hunt hit .417 with five kills on 12 swings without an error. Hunt had a season-high eight blocks tonight, and Wessels added five, and Mateska had five blocks to lead the pin blockers. Zoria Heard was steady in the back row with 15 digs.
Up Next: Washington has a quick turnaround to take on Iowa tomorrow evening, starting at 4:30 p.m. in Alaska Airlines Arena, and airing live on Big Ten Network.
