Dawgs Dictate In Sweep Over Hawkeyes
October 04, 2025 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – Some of its most consistent play of the season earned UW volleyball a second Big Ten win in less than 24 hours, as the Huskies swept Iowa, 25-19, 25-14, 25-11 in front of 3,113 fans at Alaska Airlines Arena. Washington got back even at 2-2 in conference play and 7-7 overall for the season, controlling the action against the Hawkeyes (10-6, 1-3 Big Ten) from beginning to end.
After hitting .363 in last night's 3-1 win over Ohio State, the Huskies topped that today with a .372 attack percentage, and held Iowa down to just .061. The Dawgs had a big 42-27 lead in kills and had the edge in aces (6-4) and digs (43-32). After having no blocks in set one, UW had eight over the final two sets to lead that category, 8.0 to 3.0.
Sophomore setter Alexis Haury kept the offense humming again with 35 assists. Kierstyn Barton accounted for 12 of those kills, hitting .450 with six digs. Freshman Simona Mateska had a double-double with exactly 10 kills and 10 digs, hitting .364. Alexa Markley posted nine kills, three aces, five digs and three blocks, and hit .318.
Sophomore Julia Hunt had seven kills on a .429 clip, and Katy Wessels also hit .429, with four kills, and a team-leading six blocks. Zoria Heard moved quickly around the court to rack up 16 digs.
"We talked about can we be consistent and put another good game together and control what we can control, and I thought the girls did that," said Head Coach Leslie Gabriel, who talked about her setter and libero who helped put the hitters in the best positions.
"It's fun to see Alexis get more comfortable running our offense. As she sees her hitters having success it gives her more confidence to set everyone and run the play sets that we want. I thought she ran a really good offense for us the last two.
"In our meeting after the match, (Assistant Coach) Mike said 'Zoria, I think sometimes we take you for granted' because she's back there all season all the time digging a ton of balls for us whether there's a well-formed block or not. I'm just proud of her effort and how she reads and sees the game. She does it every single day in practice and does it on gameday as well and I'm proud of her effort."
Up Next: Washington will next visit the No. 1-ranked team in the land, heading to Lincoln next Friday, Oct. 10, to face Nebraska. From there it's all the way back west to Eugene to met the Ducks on Sunday, Oct. 10.
