Huskies Haul In 39 Entries To West Prelims

SEATTLE – The next step in the postseason for Washington Track & Field takes the Huskies a long way east to the NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville, Ark. The Dawgs will have thirty-nine entries at the four-day competition which is the qualifying meet for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Arkansas will host the West Prelims from May 22-25 at John McDonnell Field, while the East Prelims will be held concurrently in Lexington, Ky.

The top-48 athletes from the western half of the country, in every individual event, will compete over one or two rounds in Fayetteville to try and finish in the top-12. Those that place in the top-12 continue on to the NCAA Outdoor final site in Eugene, Ore. from June 5-8.

Washington has 37 athletes making up its 39 entries. The two Huskies entered in multiple events are throwers Beatrice Asomaning and Kaia Tupu-South. Asomaning is in the discus and hammer, and Tupu-South is in the discus and shot put.

The Pac-12 Champion and 21st-ranked men's team has 20 entries and the 17th-ranked women's team features 19 entries.

One Husky who gets to take a well-earned break before competing at NCAAs in decathlete Jami Schlueter, as the top-24 decathletes advance straight to Eugene, and Schlueter is amongst that group, ranked 11th on the season. Schlueter will make his NCAA decathlon debut at Hayward Field.

The current West Prelims format began in 2010 and from 2010-18 the high number of qualifiers for Washington was 38 in 2013. The Huskies have bettered that total in four of the past five seasons under Maurica and Andy Powell, with 45 entries in 2019, a record 49 in 2021, then 37 entries in 2022 then 41 entries in 2023, and 39 entries this year.
