February 09, 2024 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington women's basketball (13-9, 3-8 Pac-12) put up a Dawg fight against No. 6 Stanford (21-3, 10-2 Pac-12), taking the Cardinal to the wire but ultimately falling 59-63 in overtime Friday night in Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies battled all game, and had Husky Nation on their feet and loud.
Hannah Stines hit back-to-back threes in the second quarter to fire up the energetic crowd of 4,454.
The UW defense was putting in work in the first half, and the Huskies went on an 8-0 run over 2:35 – capped off by a jumper from Elle Ladine with six seconds left in the second quarter – to go into halftime trailing by six.
Dalayah Daniels drained a three-pointer in the start of the third quarter to record 1,001 – and counting – career points. Daniels also recorded career rebound No. 600 Friday night.
Sayvia Sellers, who finished with 11 points, hit a layup to put UW within one.
Daniels had a big block on Stanford star Cameron Brink for her fifth of the night, tying a career high. Daniels also added eight points, nine rebounds, and two steals.
Stines converted an and-one opportunity with just over four minutes left to play in the third quarter to tie the game at 31.
Going into the fourth quarter, UW trailed by eight points.
With 4:33 remaining in the fourth, Daniels grabbed an offensive board and made a layup to put UW within three. Seconds later, Ladine grabbed the steal and score to cut the gap to one point.
The Huskies went on a 7-0 run, fighting to the finish.
Stines hit another three with 42 seconds left to put UW within four. She finished with a team-leading 17 points.
With only 22 seconds left, UW was down by three.
Then, with 18 seconds left in regulation, Sellers stole the ball which led to a three-pointer from Lauren Schwartz who tied it with 15 seconds left. Schwartz finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Sellers finished with three steals and tied her career high of five rebounds.
A huge defensive stance by the Huskies sent the game to overtime tied up at 50. The 50 points scored by the Cardinal in regulation were their fewest all season. This was the first time UW had forced an overtime vs. Stanford since their first meeting in 1980.
Overtime went fast, and with 6.5 seconds left, UW trailed by two. Ultimately, the Huskies lost by four.
UW held Stanford to below their season and conference field goal percentage averages. The 18 turnovers the Huskies forced Stanford to commit was above what the Cardinal had been allowing themselves on average.
Next up, Washington hosts California Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. PT.
