Huskies Battle In Tight Loss To Cal
February 11, 2024 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington women's basketball (13-10, 3-9 Pac-12) battled until the very end against California (15-10, 5-8 Pac-12) but fell 57-59 in another nailbiter Sunday afternoon in Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies showed a lot of toughness, and after trailing early, fought back to go into halftime down by just two points.
Washington came out hot in the second half, with Lauren Schwartz getting the scoring started with a jumper. Schwartz then came up with a big block that led to a layup from Hannah Stines, assisted by Elle Ladine, to put UW up by two early in the third quarter.
With 4:26 left in the third quarter, the game was tied at 33. At the end of the third, UW trailed by six points.
The fourth quarter had the crowd on their feet as the Huskies battled to close the gap.
Ladine had a big steal that resulted in a layup from Dalayah Daniels. Then Jayda Noble had a steal and score opportunity that put the Huskies within four points early.
Noble drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 50 with 6:31 to play. The teams continued to trade buckets as the clock ticked down.
Daniels hit a three-pointer with 46 seconds left to close the gap to three points.
A big defensive stance by the Huskies caused a shot clock violation turnover on Cal with 14 seconds to play. Ladine was fouled with four seconds left to go, and went to the line, converting her first free throw before intentionally missing the second for a last effort.
Daniels led the team in scoring with 13 points, and added two blocks. Ladine had 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Schwartz was the third Husky in double-digit scoring with 10 points and five rebounds. Stines, who also had five rebounds, added eight points. Noble finished with three steals on the day.
UW forced 19 turnovers, which was above what Cal had been committing on average during the season.
Next up, Washington hits the road to take on Arizona State on Friday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. PT and Arizona on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. PT.
