Win Streak Snapped Despite Pertofsky’s Big Match

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Husky volleyball team looked to be suffering the after-effects of Thursday night's five set win this afternoon against a rested Pepperdine team, as the Waves swept the Huskies at the Mott Athletics Center to snap UW's eight-match win streak. Senior May Pertofsky was outstanding despite the outcome, tying her career-high for the second time this season with 18 kills and hitting .366.
Final scores were 25-21, 25-17, 25-19. Pepperdine hit .305 as a team and the Huskies hit a season-low .119. The Waves had a big edge in kills, 46-32, and finished with 50 digs compared to 37 for the Huskies. Washington had a 5-3 lead in aces while Pepperdine had one more block, 7.0 to 6.0.
Pertofsky's previous 18-kill effort came in the season-opener, which was a five setter. She got 18 in three sets today, including nine in the first set alone. Madi Endsley added nine kills and seven digs for the Dawgs.
The Huskies had a 10-9 lead in the first set but Pepperdine took the lead with a 3-0 run and wouldn't give it up. UW cut a five-point gap to two at 18-20 on a Molly Wilson ace, but Pepperdine held steady and finished it off, 25-21.
The Waves scored the first three points of set two. Washington was down by six points when a 3-0 run on Grace Zilbert's serve cut it to 12-15. But Pepperdine pulled away with a 4-0 run and UW used its last timeout at 14-21. The Waves took the 2-0 lead with a 25-17 win.
Washington brought Kayce Litzau in to set the third set, and the Huskies had some early positive momentum, getting a 5-2 lead on a Pertofsky kill, a Wilmes and Hani block, and a Pertofsky ace. Litzau had a solo block to make it 17-15 Dawgs, but then Pepperdine seized the match for good with a 8-0 run.
UP NEXT: Washington finishes up the Mustang Invitational and nonconference play tomorrow morning, with the earliest start time of the season, a 10:30 a.m. first serve against Saint Mary's.
