Washington Drops Game One at No. 7 UCLA, 5-1
March 24, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Kiefer Lord and Jake Brooks were locked in a pitcher's duel for much of the night Friday before No. 7 UCLA (16-3, 4-0 Pac-12) broke things open late, topping Washington (14-6, 2-2 Pac-12) 5-1 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Lord was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on six hits over six complete, striking out eight. Josh Emanuels, Sam Boyle and Grant Cunningham finished the final two innings in relief.
Washington put itself in prime position to strike first in the fourth, with Will Simpson and Johnny Tincher leading off the frame with singles. However, the Dawgs couldn't capitalize, stranding the pair.
Shortly after, Jack Holman connected on a two-run home run to right field, putting the Bruins ahead 2-0.
UW again threatened in the seventh but left a pair of runners aboard and UCLA once again took advantage, putting up three runs to add some insurance.
After leaving the bases juiced in the eighth, the Huskies got on the board on Michael Snyder's solo shot to deep left-center. However, it was not enough as game one went to the home team.
QUICK HITS
• After not going deep in the first 16 games of the season, Michael Snyder has hit a home run in three of the last four games.
