Diamond Dawgs Begin Pac-12 Play With 5-2 Win Over Utah
March 10, 2023 | Baseball
SEATTLE β Washington (11-2, 1-0 Pac-12) took the lead during its first at-bat Friday night and never looked back, toppling Utah (6-7, 0-1 Pac-12) 5-2 at Husky Ballpark to open Pac-12 play and run its winning streak to 10 games.
Β
Kiefer Lord earned his third win on the hill, allowing a single run over 5.2 innings with just three hits allowed and five strikeouts. Josh Emanuels allowed his first run of the season but was nonetheless electric in relief over 2.2 frames, while Case Matter dramatically shut things down for his third save.
Β
After Lord set down the Utes in order in the first, Cam Clayton gave the righty an early lead to protect, taking an offering the other way over the right field fence for a leadoff home run.
Β
An AJ Guerrero RBI single and a Michael Brown ground ball in the third brought home another pair for the Dawgs, putting the home side up 3-0.
Β
Utah Responded with an RBI single to cut into the deficit in the fourth but Washington got the run right back as Will Simpson's deep fly ball brought home Clayton on a sacrifice.
Β
The Utes once again got the lead down to two in the seventh, serving a single to right off the bat of Elijha Hammill. However, a perfectly executed hit-and-run restored the three-run advantage as Sam DeCarlo brought Dalton Chandler all the way around from first to make it 5-2.
Β
The Utes put two runners on and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but Case Matter needed just eight pitches to set down two batters on strikes, locking down the win in Washington's Pac-12 opener.
