DeCarlo’s Walk Off Bomb Clinches Utah Series for Diamond Dawgs
March 11, 2023 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Washington (12-2, 2-0 Pac-12) lost a late lead on Saturday but Rookie Sam DeCarlo had the final say, cranking a walk-off solo shot to lift the Huskies to a 4-3 win and clinch the series over Utah (6-8, 0-2 Pac-12)
Like Kiefer Lord before him yesterday, starter Stu Flesland III was dynamic on the bump despite the no decision, going seven strong with two runs allowed on four hits and a walk. Case Matter collected his second win of the season to improve to 2-0
Taking advantage of Dakota Duffalo's leadoff double and some Husky difficulty fielding bunts, the Utes grabbed the lead in the third inning, plating a pair.
Washington answered in the fourth, first with Coby Morales bringing home Will Simpson with a sacrifice fly and then on Michael Sndyer's game-tying RBI double to right, plating AJ Guerrero.
The next inning, Simpson put the Dawgs on top, hammering a pitch well past the wall in left-center, a 404 foot bomb to put UW up 3-2.
That's when things got interesting in the ninth. With one out on the board and a pair of runners on, UW turned to Matter to attempt to get out of the jam. The Husky closer got a pivotal punchout for out number two but an HBP with the bases loaded brought in the tying run before Matter retired the side with some high heat.
That's where DeCarlo stepped in, putting a charge into a 3-2 offering and meeting his teammates at home plate to celebrate.
