November 06, 2023 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington women's basketball (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12) opened the season at home with a decisive 76-28 win over Sacramento State (0-1, 0-0 Big Sky) Monday night in Alaska Airlines Arena.
"It was great to take the floor and get to see everyone get to compete together," head coach Tina Langley said.
Dalayah Daniels got the scoring started with an and-one opportunity, which was capitalized on, and followed that up with a block, marking her 100th career block, and 53rd as a Husky. Daniels finished with eight points and six rebounds.
Elle Ladine led all scorers with 20 points, and was in double digits before halftime. Ladine also contributed five rebounds and three steals.
Newcomers Sayvia Sellers, Chloe Briggs, Ari Long, and Olivia Anderson all made their Husky debuts. Long finished as the other Husky in double digits, recording 10 points.
By the end of the game, every Husky had scored.
A steal by Daniels punctuated by a three at the buzzer from Jayda Noble sent the Huskies into halftime with a 40-13 lead and lots of energy.
The third quarter got off to a hot start, with Ladine sinking a three. The Dawgs continued to bring the energy as Lauren Schwartz made quick work of a steal and score opportunity.
Washington shot 46.0%, above last season's average, while holding Sacramento State to 22.7%, well below their average last season.
The Huskies out-rebounded the Hornets 47-24 and forced 22 turnovers. Sacramento State hadn't scored fewer than 40 points since 2007.
Hannah Stines was an all-around contributor, putting up eight points, six rebounds, and a game-leading four assists. Shayla Gillmer led both teams with eight rebounds.
The Huskies return to the floor on Thursday, Nov. 9 to take on North Carolina Central at 5 p.m. PT in Alaska Airlines Arena.
