Huskies Fight On Both Ends To Defeat Air Force
November 25, 2023 | Women's Basketball
HONOLULU, Hawaii – Washington women's basketball (6-0, 0-0) defeated Air Force (4-2, 0-0 Mountain West) 73-53 Saturday afternoon in SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown. It's the second game in a row the Huskies have won by 20 points.
There was a historic connection during today's matchup. Air Force head coach Chris Gobrecht was the head coach at UW for 11 seasons (1985-96), and is still in the record books as the winningest head coach in program history with 243 wins.
"I have so much respect for Chris Gobrecht. As the all-time winningest coach in program history, her teams helped set the standard for Husky basketball. It was an honor to play against her and the young women of Air Force today," head coach Tina Langley said. "Air Force plays incredibly hard, disciplined basketball for 40 minutes, and challenges you to execute on both ends of the floor. I'm proud of the way we rose to that challenge today."
In the second game of three in the tournament, the Huskies put up another big defensive effort.
Washington out-rebounded Air Force 45-31 and held the Falcons to 31.6% from the field while the Huskies shot 45.3%.
"In our second away game of the season, we saw another solid defensive performance," Langley said. "It's been great to see our continued commitment to growing on both ends of the floor."
A layup from Jayda Noble marked the first points of the game. She finished with a season high 11 points and contributed two steals on the day.
Early in the first quarter, Ari Long forced a turnover and went into a fast break layup for an and one opportunity, which she converted. A few plays later, she took a charge. The bench was fired up. Long finished the game with eight points.
The Huskies held the Falcons scoreless through 4:22 in the first quarter, and forced four turnovers in 4:06.
Lauren Schwartz was in double digits before halftime, and finished the game leading all scorers with a season high 19 points. Schwartz also recorded five rebounds and two blocks.
Washington held Air Force to 16.7% from the field in the first half while out-rebounding the Falcons 30-17 to go into halftime with a 35-19 lead.
In the third quarter, the Dawg defense forced three turnovers in 2:47, and UW went on an 18-3 run over 5:44 to end the quarter.
Hannah Stines put up a season high 13 points, a career high seven rebounds, career high-tying five assists, and added both a block and a steal on the day.
