Defense Shines In Washington's Road Win Over Idaho State
November 24, 2023 | Women's Basketball
HONOLULU, Hawaii – Washington women's basketball (5-0, 0-0) defeated Idaho State (2-3, 0-0 Big Sky) 57-37 Friday afternoon in SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii in the opening game of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
In the first road contest of the season, the Huskies came out strong on defense, holding the Bengals scoreless through the first 5:06. The 37 points was the second-lowest score from an opponent this season.
"First off, we're so grateful for the opportunity to make the trip to Hawaii for Thanksgiving and to spend this time together," head coach Tina Langley said. "It's been a great experience continuing to learn more about one another both on and off the court. This is also our first road trip, so it's been great to see how the team has responded thus far."
Lauren Schwartz hit a three-pointer for the first points of the game, and would go on to sink two more on the game to finish with a team-leading 13 points.
Dalayah Daniels was the other Husky in double digits, finishing with 11 points and a game-leading six rebounds.
Washington went into halftime with a 30-14 lead, and had already forced nine turnovers, seven steals, and held Idaho State to 28.6% shooting.
UW held ISU to only one made three-pointer all game, which didn't score until the fourth quarter.
"From our last game to today, I like the growth we made on the defensive end of the floor," Langley said. "We were more aggressive and were able to force some turnovers. Idaho State is a well coached team and they made us execute on both ends."
The Huskies forced 22 turnovers, the most so far this season. The 14 steals were the most in a game since the Dawgs recorded 15 early on last season.
Hannah Stines recorded a career high-tying three steals in the first half. She finished with six points, and a game-leading three assists.
Jayda Noble recorded four steals to tie a career high. She finished with six points and five rebounds.
The Huskies went on an 8-0 run over the last three minutes of the game to solidify the win.
Up next, Washington takes on Air Force Saturday, Nov. 25 at 12 p.m. HT / 2 p.m. PT in their second game of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
