SEATTLE -- The Huskies are in the homestretch, with the NCAA West Preliminary Championships up this week as the final challenge toward reaching the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Washington has a group of thirty-four athletes embedded in Fayetteville, Ark. for the four-day meet, which begins Wednesday, May 25, at Arkansas' John McDonnell Field.
The meet will alternate between men's and women's action, starting with the men on Wednesday, and Friday will be the final day for the men. The women will take the stage on Thursday and Saturday. Running events will be streamed online via SEC Network+
The NCAA Championships start with fields of 96 athletes in every individual event and 48 relays, splitting those fields into a West and East region. Forty-eight individuals in each event and 24 relays are on hand in Fayetteville while the Eastern half meets this week in Bloomington, Indiana. A top-12 finish will mean continuing on to the final site of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. from June 8-11.
All individual track events from 100-meters up to the 1,500-meters will have two rounds in College Station, while the 3,000m steeplechase, the 5k and 10k races will have one round, and the relays will have one round as well.
Throws and horizontal jumps will take all 48 entries, broken into three or four flights based on season-bests, and give them all three attempts each, simply taking the top-12 after everyone has had three attempts. The high jump and pole vault bars will keep moving up until only 12 competitors remain.
The Huskies are coming off a great Pac-12 Championships, where the men tied their best finish in program history with a second-place showing, and the women finished a strong fifth-place. The Huskies won five individual titles, tied for the third-most in program history, and the most since 2016. Of the five winners, four will be competing in their same events this weekend: Joe Waskom in the 1,500m, Cass Elliott in the 400m hurdles, Carley Thomas in the 800m, and Makenna Barton in the pole vault. Pac-12 steeplechase champion Brian Fay will be focusing exclusively on the 5,000-meters.
Washington will be looking to build its NCAA final site roster, which already has two names on the list, as multi-event standouts Ida Eikeng and Ollie Thorner have each auto-qualified for nationals by having a season-best heptathlon and decathlon score that ranked in the top-24 nationally.
