SEATTLE -- 2021, Part 2 begins this week for the Washington volleyball team. Just over four months since the conclusion of the delayed 2020 season, the Huskies will start another run through a more traditional slate of games, beginning Friday with its first non-conference matches since 2019. The Huskies are headed to Columbus, Ohio and Nationwide Arena, which is where they would prefer to end the season as well, as the arena is the site for the 2021 National Championships in December.
Ohio State is the host for the Sports Imports Classic, which will see the fourth-ranked Huskies open their season on Friday, Aug. 27, against the Ohio Bobcats at 1:30 p.m. Pacific time. Then on Saturday, Washington faces the 11th-ranked Buckeyes at 4 p.m. PT in a match streamed online via Big Ten Network Plus.
The Huskies returned all but one letterwinner, Maria Bogomolova, from the 2020-21 team that made a run to the Final Four in April following a Pac-12 title, ending the year with a 20-4 overall record and a 17-3 mark in Pac-12 play. It was the program's fifth Final Four and first under Head Coach Keegan Cook, and the program's sixth Pac-12 title, and third under Cook.
Three Huskies earned AVCA All-America honors last season: Samantha Drechsel, Claire Hoffman, and Ella May Powell; all three were also named 2021 Preseason All-Pac-12, as Washington was voted the Pac-12 preseason favorite.
Ohio calls the MAC home, and was picked fourth in the East Division preseason poll. Geoff Carlston is in his first year as Head Coach of the Bobcats, returning to the team he coached from 2003-07. Carlston led Ohio State for 12 years. Last year Ohio was 12-8 in the MAC and made the tournament semifinals. Middle blocker Caitlin O'Farrell and libero Sam Steele were named to the MAC All-Freshman Team last year. The Huskies and Ohio last played in 2006, a Husky win.
Ohio State made the NCAA Round of 16 a year ago before falling to Florida, and boasted the AVCA National Freshman of the Year in outside hitter Emily Londot. The Buckeyes were picked to finish sixth in the Big Ten preseason poll this season. The Buckeyes went 15-3 in Big Ten play last year after beginning the season 12-0, and Jen Flynn Oldenburg was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in her first season with the team. Londot was a Second Team All-American in her first season, and led OSU with 4.07 kills per set. Setter Mac Podraza was named an honorable mention All-American, averaging 10.90 assists per set. Middle blocker Rylee Rader, libero Kylie Murr and opposite Vanja Bukilic all garnered second team All-Big Ten accolades last year. UW and OSU last met in the 2015 NCAA Round of 16, with the Huskies getting a 3-2 win.
