Pin Power Carries Huskies Past Beavers
February 06, 2021 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – Washington's outside hitters were all clicking today against Oregon State and that made for an efficient offensive performance in what was a 25-18, 27-25, 25-17 sweep for the 11th-ranked Huskies at Alaska Airlines Arena. Washington (5-1, 5-1 Pac-12) took down the Beavers (1-5, 1-5 Pac-12) for the second time in three days as Claire Hoffman, Madi Endsley, and Samantha Drechsel all had 12 or more kills, and all hit over .400.
With three hitters all clicking, credit has to be shared with the setter and the passers. Junior setter Ella May Powell dished out 35 assists in the win and added three more aces to the five she served up on Thursday. Shannon Crenshaw handled the majority of OSU's serves and kept the Huskies in system for much of the match, and she added eight digs.
Hoffman hit a career-high .609 today, getting 14 kills on 23 swings without a single error. Endsley had her best attacking match yet in her freshman campaign, getting 14 kills on a .458 percentage and adding two aces. Drechsel had a dozen put-aways on 24 swings, hitting .417, and she tied her career-high with four aces.
"We were able to get it done at the pins with all three pin-hitters hitting for high efficiency," said Head Coach Keegan Cook. "That's going to give you a good shot every day."
"It was a good finish to the match from a discipline standpoint," Cook said. "The first two sets I thought we were pretty undisciplined on the offensive side of the ball. That last set we put it all together and hit our shots the way that we're supposed to. Defensively, a lot to be desired, especially in that second set. I'd like to see us be more disciplined at the net and more gritty behind the block."
Washington outhit Oregon State for the match, .347 to .233 and after firing off 16 aces on Thursday, UW was tough again from the service line today with nine aces, while giving up just one ace by the Beavers. UW had a 47-36 edge in kills and a 5.0 to 4.0 lead in blocks.
UP NEXT: The Huskies are off on the road for the next two weeks, first heading to Los Angeles for two road battles at No. 18 UCLA. The first meeting will be Friday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m. Pacific.
