Home Opener Is Boeing Apple Cup Series Game
December 09, 2020 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE -- Washington (3-1, 1-1 Pac-12) opens at home this week and will welcome Washington State (0-0) to Alaska Airlines Arena for the Boeing Apple Cup Series on Friday. The Huskies and Cougars will tip-off for the 91st time in series history at 4:00 p.m. It is the first of four-straight home games scheduled for the Huskies. Friday's game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks with Ann Schatz and Elise Woodward on the call. Fans can also listen locally to Gary Hill Jr. on the UW/IMG College Network on KKNW 1150 AM, on the TuneIn App, or GoHuskies.com.
Leading the Break
• UW has finished strong in games this season. The Huskies are outscoring opponents 77-49 in the fourth quarter, including 47-29 in Pac-12 play.
• This will be the third-straight year -- fourth time in five seasons -- UW has opened Pac-12 play at home against Washington State. The Huskies are 36-10 all-time at home vs. the Cougars. WSU has won two-straight at Alaska Airlines Arena, but the Huskies have never dropped three-straight at home in the series.
• The Huskies have started 3-1 in six of the last seven seasons. They have gone 4-1 in four of the last seven years.
• Tameiya Sadler leads the Huskies in both scoring (16.0 ppg) and rebounds (5.8 rpg). FWIW, the last Husky freshman to lead the team in both scoring and rebounding was Yvette Cole in 1986 (12.2 ppg/5.0 rpg). Sadler is the first Husky freshman to tally 20 points or more in back-to-back games since Kelsey Plum did it numerous times in 2013-14. Sadler scored 23 points against BYU and followed it up with 21 at Cal. Plum scored 20 or more points 20 times and 30 or more four times in her record-setting freshman season.
• Washington's win over Cal snapped a seven-game road losing streak for the Huskies. That streak was the sixth longest such stretch in program history. The 27-point margin of victory over the Bears was the largest in Pac-12 play for fourth-year coach Jody Wynn.
• Sophomore Quay Miller made quite a splash in her 2020-21 debut. She set new career highs with 19 points and 10 rebounds to record the first double-double of her career.
Scouting the Cougars
The Cougs return a heap of familiar faces in 2020-21 with seven players coming back from a season ago. However, WSU endured the loss of a pair of program stalwarts this offseason, with the graduation of Borislava Hristova, the programs' all-time leading scorer, and Chanelle Molina, who finished her career ranked second in program history in assists.
WSU still returns a trio of players that started 21-or-more games last season in juniors Shir Levy and Ula Motuga, along with sophomore Bella Murekatete. The Cougars also have five other returning players and five newcomers in the mix.
Coach Kamie Ethridge is in her third season at WSU after spending four years as Northern Colorado's coach. She is 3-1 all-time against UW since arriving on the Palouse.
All-Time Series vs Washington State
Washington holds a commanding 73-17 edge in the all-time series including a 36-10 edge in games in Seattle. However, the Cougars have had an edge in the recent series, winning four of the last six games in the series. It is their best stretch in the Boeing Apple Cup series since a streak from 1976-81 when they went 4-2 over a similar stretch. The teams split the series last year with each team winning on the opposition's home court.
Boeing Apple Cup Series
In 2018, the Apple Cup expanded from the football field to encompass all sports the two schools play against each other in the new Boeing Apple Cup Series. As each UW-WSU match-up is completed, the winning school is awarded points based on the above scoring system. The school with the most points at the completion of all match-ups will win the Boeing Apple Cup Series Trophy. The winning team will receive 30 points, the loser 15, towards the yearly standings. Last Game
The Huskies fell 50-83 to No. 2 Stanford last Sunday. The win elevated the Cardinal to No. 1 in the nation. Quay Miller led UW with 10 points, while Tameiya Sadler nearly recorded a double-double with 8 points and 11 assists.
Up Next
The Huskies added the Portland Pilots to their schedule and will face the WCC stalwart on Sunday, Dec. 13 at Alaska Airlines Arena. Tip will be at 2:00 p.m.
