SEATTLE - Third week, third trip for the 12th-ranked Washington volleyball team, which heads to the Midwest for the second straight week with another Top-20 showdown among the week's challenges. The Huskies (4-1) return to the scene of their biggest win from 2018, Creighton's D.J. Sokol Arena, to take part in the four team Bluejay Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14.
Joining UW and Creighton in Omaha will be Drake and Nebraska-Omaha. The Huskies will play Drake first on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Pacific time. Saturday will be UW's one and only double-header of the season when they play Nebraska-Omaha at 8 a.m. Pacific time then take on the 17th-ranked Bluejays at 5:30 p.m. Pacific. Creighton will provide a live video stream for all tournament matches at http://GoCreighton.com/watch
Creighton will be out for revenge on Saturday as Washington upset the Bluejays in the second round of the NCAA tournament last season in D.J. Sokol Arena. Washington will be looking for a third win over a top-25 opponent in three weeks, after earning wins over then-No. 21 San Diego and then-No. 5 Illinois.
First up will be the Drake Bulldogs, a team the Huskies have faced just once back in 2000, a 3-0 win for UW. A member of the Missouri Valey Conference, Drake is 5-2 thus far with wins over South Dakota State, Eastern and Western Illinois, Eastern Washington, and Saint Louis, and losses to Saint Louis in four sets and Milwaukee in five. Junior libero Kylee Macke was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week this week. Drake was 21-15 a year ago and took part in the NIVC. Freshman Haley Bush is leading the offense with 3.64 kills per set and Emily Plock is hitting .318 with 3.36 kills per set.
This will be the first meeting ever for UW against Nebraska-Omaha. The Mavericks, out of the Summit League, have already gone against three teams from power five conferences and played well. Omaha swept Clemson last week and lost in five sets to Kansas State, with a 3-0 loss to Kansas as well. Omaha has wins over Abilene Christian, Idaho State, Albany, and Central Arkansas along with Clemson for a 5-2 record. Junior outside hitter Isabella Sade had 20 kills in just three sets in the win over Clemson and 19 more in the loss to Kansas State. She was an All-Summit Team pick last year. Jaclyn Taylor sets the offense with 10.15 assists per set and Claire Mountjoy is averaging over five digs per set as the libero. Omaha was 17-12 a year ago.
Creighton has already played four top-20 teams in just the first two weeks of the season, going 3-2 thus far with a big 3-0 weekend last week at Northern Iowa where it defeated No. 12 Kentucky, No. 15 USC, and Northern Iowa in five sets to win the tournament. In week one, CU had a four set loss to No. 2 Nebraska and a 3-0 loss to then-No. 20 Baylor which has since jumped to No. 5 nationally. Creighton lost three starters from its 2018 squad that won the Big East title with a 29-5 record, but has three more seniors leading the way this year. Middle Megan Ballenger averages 2.50 kills/set and hits .327. Madelyn Cole is posting 10.40 assists/set and 3.05 digs/set and libero Brittany Witt adds 5.05 digs per set. All three were named Preseason All-Big East. Junior middle blocker Naomi Hickman was MVP of the UNI tournament, hitting for 17 kills against Kentucky and 11 on a .733 percentage against USC. This will also be a rubber match of sorts for the Huskies and Bluejays. Creighton won in Seattle in preseason play in 2017, then UW got the win in Omaha last year.
