Washington Opens Season With Weekend Series
August 28, 2019 | Men's Soccer
Quick Strikes
• Washington is riding a five-match shutout streak dating back to last season–one shy of tying the program record set in 1973. The Huskies haven't allowed a goal in their last 486 minutes.
• Head Coach Jamie Clark needs just one more victory to reach 100 with UW. He is 99-42-20 (.677 winning percentage) as he enters his ninth season with the Huskies. Clark would be the third coach in program history to win 100 games (Dean Wurzberger 220, Mike Ryan 105).
• The Huskies are 48-5-4 all-time in home openers and 39-13-5 in season openers. Washington has won seven-straight home openers including a 2-0 victory over eventual NCAA Champion Maryland last year. The Huskies are 26-2-2 in their last 30 home openers.
• In 2018, UW posted a 12-7-1 record including a 6-4-0 Pac-12 record (3rd place), reaching the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season and the sixth time in the last seven years.
• Washington closed out the 2018 season strong, finishing with a 4-0-1 record in its final five matches while outscoring its opponents 8-0 over that stretch.
• UW is facing Denver for the eighth time, trailing 2-3-2 in the series (0-1-1 in Seattle). The Huskies are 0-3-1 in their last four meetings including a 3-2, 2OT loss at Denver last season.
• Washington meets San Francisco for the 14th time, but the first time since 1998. UW is 3-2-0 vs USF in Seattle including 6-1 and 2-1 wins the last time the teams played.
The Denver Pioneers At A Glance
The Pioneers made their third trip to the NCAA tournament in four seasons last year, though–like the Huskies–they fell in their first match. Denver split a pair of exhibition contests this past week, losing 1-0 to Air Force before beating Gonzaga 2-0 on Friday.
Denver lost quite a bit of offense from a 2018 team which posted a 15-4-2 overall record. Out of the 42 goals scored by the Pioneers only five came from players on the 2019 roster. The biggest loss came with the graduation of Andre Shinyashiki, who tallied 28 goals on the year.
Series History vs. Denver
Denver holds a 3-2-2 overall record in the series and is 3-0-1 against UW in the last four meetings between the two teams. There have been just two previous matches in the series played in Seattle with Denver holding a 1-0-1 record in those contests.
Last season, the Pioneers won a 3-2 double-overtime thriller in Denver, scoring a late equalizer then netting the match-winner early in the second extra period. Denver took an early lead on a UW own goal, but the Huskies rallied with a pair of goals early in the second: one by Joey Parish and another by Dylan Teves.
The San Francisco Dons At A Glance
The Dons are under the direction of first-year head coach Leonard Griffin, who is making his collegiate head coaching debut. Griffin, a former All-American defender at UCLA who spent three seasons as the assistant coach at the University of Portland, has been busy, adding 10 players to the young roster as he gears up for his first season in the WCC.
San Francisco, which opens the regular season at Seattle University on Friday, posted a 6-10-1 record in 2018 including a 4-3-0 WCC mark. The Dons' biggest victory came early in the season in a 1-0 upset win at then-No. 8 UCLA on Sept. 2. They followed that up later in the year with a 2-1 victory over No. 7 Portland, closing out the season with three wins in their final four matches.
Series History vs. San Francisco
The Dons lead the all-time series with the Huskies 8-5-0, though this will be the first meeting between the teams since 1998. Washington's rivalry with San Francisco dates back to the infancy of the program with the teams first meeting in 1968. That first contest was an NCAA First-Round matchup in which USF handed the Huskies a 16-0 loss–their worst in program history. The teams played regularly from 1974 until 1988, though the Dons won eight of the first 11 meetings.
After a brief break, the teams played a home-and-home series in 1997 and 1998 with UW winning 6-1 in SF and 2-1 the next year in Seattle.
For Openers...
Washington is riding a seven-match winning streak in home openers, including an impressive 2-0 victory over eventual NCAA Champion Maryland to kick off the 2018 season. The Huskies have historically dominated in home openers, posting a 48-5-4 overall record in 57 such contests. In fact, UW has lost just two home openers since 1988–both to Portland (2009 and 2011)–and has amassed a 26-2-2 in its last 30.
The Huskies are 39-13-5 all-time in season-opening matches, going 7-1-0 in eight seasons under Head Coach Jamie Clark. The lone blemish on that record was a 2-1 defeat at Utah Valley to open the 2016 season. Washington defeated Gonzaga in five-straight season-openers from 2011-15, outscoring the Zags 11-1 in those matches.
Shutout Streak
Washington closed out the 2018 season on an absolute roll defensively, posting five-straight shutouts to end the year without allowing a goal in 486-straight minutes. The Huskies are just one shutout shy of tying the program record of six set back in the 1973 season.
Washington posted a total of 10 shutouts last season, the most since recording 11 in 2015. Since Jamie Clark took over the team in 2011, 69 of Washington's 99 wins have been via shutout.
Clark's 100th UW Win
Jamie Clark has won 99 matches at UW, needing just one more to become the third coach in program history with 100 wins (Dean Wurzberger 220, Mike Ryan 105). As he enters his ninth season on Montlake, Clark is 99-42-20 (.667 winning percentage), with UW having won at least 12 matches in seven of eight years at the helm.
Last season, Clark coached his 200th match as a head coach: a 2-0 win at New Mexico in the second match of the year. Clark began his coaching career at Harvard where his teams went 26-10-1 in two seasons. He coached one year at Creighton, going 13-5-2 before moving to Seattle.
Bodily Bringing In The Honors
Junior midfielder Blake Bodily was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list to start the year (awarded to the top college soccer player), becoming the first Husky since Cristian Roldan to earn that honor. In addition, Bodily was a preseason All-Pac-12 selection and earned preseason All-America honors from Top Drawer Soccer (3rd Team) and College Soccer News (2nd Team).
Bodily, a two-time first-team All-Pac-12 pick, scored two goals with four assists in an injury-plagued 2018 season after tallying three goals and a team-best eight assists en route to earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors in 2017.
Soto Earns Freshman Honors
Freshman Christian Soto earned an impressive honor this week, being named to the Top Drawer Soccer Best Freshman XI Team. Soto comes to UW after playing for Crossfire FC with Husky teammates Charlie Ostrem and Ethan Bartlow and earned a USBNT call-up with the U17 National Team Camp in 2016.
Preseason All-Pac-12 Coaches Picks
The Huskies saw three players named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 team: junior Blake Bodily and sophomores Ethan Bartlow and Dylan Teves. In addition, UW was picked to finish second by the Pac-12 coaches, just six points behind Stanford and two points ahead of Oregon State.
2018 Pac-12 All-Conference Selections
For the second-straight season, Washington placed seven players on the All-Pac-12 men's soccer team with a trio of Huskies earning a first-team honors. Kyle Coffee, Quentin Pearson and Blake Bodily were selected to the All-Pac-12 First Team while Scott Menzies earned second-team honors. Corban Anderson and freshmen Ethan Bartlow and Dylan Teves received honorable mention recognition.
Gotta Get That First One
Washington found success when scoring the first goal of the match in 2018, going 12-1-0 when finding the back of the net first. (The lone loss was the 3-2, 2 OT loss vs Stanford.) On the other hand, the Huskies are 0-6-0 when conceding the first goal.
That's Just Offensive, Man
The Washington offense was impressive in 2018, scoring has been impressive throughout the season, scoring 31 goals through 20 matches. Overall, 14 different Huskies recorded a point last season–13 tallying at least two–and 10 different players found the back of the net.
