UW Opens Season With 2-1 Upset Over No. 18 Denver
August 30, 2019 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Blake Bodily scored the match-winner in the 69th minute on the second assist of the night from Dylan Teves as Washington upset No. 18 Denver 2-1 in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies open the season with a victory for the eighth-straight season, coming from behind after allowing a goal in the opening minute to snap its 486-minute shutout streak. Bodily netted the match-winner in the second half after Gio Miglietti tied up the game in the sixth minute. Teves recorded assists on both goals.
The victory was also the 100th at UW for Husky head coach Jamie Clark, who improves to 100-42-20 as he begins his ninth season at Washington. He becomes the third coach to reach 100 wins at UW.
Bodily put the Huskies up for good in 69th minute on a brilliant goal. Teves again worked down the right side and sent a low cross into the box behind the first runner on the near post but right in front of Bodily on the far post. The junior slide into the cross and sent it in off the underside of the cross bar and in to give UW a 2-1 lead.
The Pioneers held a 10-8 lead in the game, though many of the shots came from distance but were put on frame. Washington netminder Bryce Logan made a career-high seven saves including a sprawling save on a free kick early in the second half.
Denver wasted little time getting on the board, scoring on a deep strike from Josh Drake just 26 seconds into the game to go up 1-0.
But Washington answered back with a goal just five minutes later as Miglietti scored his first collegiate goal in the sixth minute. Miglietti re-directed a Teves cross right in front of the far post off the keeper and into the net.
Both teams had quality chances over the next 40 minutes, but the game went to half tied at 1-1. The Huskies held a 6-5 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Washington closed out the 2018 season with five-straight shutouts—one game shy of tying the program record--ending the year without allowing a goal in 486-straight minutes. The Huskies also improve to 49-5-4 all-time in home openers and 40-13-5 in season-opening matches.
The game was chippy throughout with a total of 35 fouls whistled and seven cards handed out. Denver was on the receiving end of five of those cards with UW receiving two.
Washington returns to action on Monday, hosting the University of San Francisco in a non-conference matchup at Husky Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
