Huskies Score Four Runs After Two Outs In The Eighth To Rally Past Portland
May 08, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The Huskies scored four runs after there were two outs in the eighth inning to flip a two-run deficit into a 10-8 win over Portland on Wednesday at Husky Ballpark.
Rollie Nichols, who entered the game in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter, provided the big blow. With the bases loaded and a 3-2 count, the junior took a Connor Knutson slider and placed it perfectly into the right-field corner for his first career triple.
"It's tough to stay locked in when you're sitting on the bench for most of the game," Nichols said following the biggest hit of his brief UW career. "But, I just want to pull for my teammates all game long, so I pay attention and try to pick up on pitchers tendencies, so if I do get the opportunity, I can make the most of it, like I did tonight."
Nichols' hit came on the heels of Ramon Bramasco's two-out infield single just off the tip of the glove of Trayce Tammaro at first base that cut Portland's lead to 8-7.
The Huskies (24-19) did not lead in the game until Nichols' eighth-inning hit. They fell behind early and fought tooth-and-nail to claw back into the game. The Pilots (23-23) took a 2-0 lead in the second and led 5-1 in the fourth before the bats woke up.
UW got two runs back in the fourth on a two-run double by junior third baseman Nick Roberts to make it a 5-3 ballgame.
After another Portland run, the Huskies scored two more in the fifth to get within a run. Bramasco drove in a run with a RBI single and another run scored on a throwing error by the Pilots – one of four errors on the night for the visitors.
The Huskies finally tied things up in the sixth inning, 6-6, once again taking advantage of a Portland miscue. Pitcher Peter Allegro threw a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Roberts into right field allowing Ben Baird to score from second.
UW's momentum seemingly hit the wall when Portland catcher Hunter Montgomery hit a two-run homer to center field off of Jack Enger in the seventh inning. But the Husky bullpen would bear down from there as Chris Micheles (6-2) recorded two outs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to pick up his team leading sixth win of the season.
Stevie Emanuels set down the Pilots in order in the ninth, getting Tammaro to strike out swinging to end the game and earn his fourth save of the season.
The Huskies resume Pac-12 play this weekend and will host Utah for a three-game series starting on Friday at 7:00 p.m. All three games will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
