Kahle Homers Twice In UW’s 12-5 Rout Of Utah
May 10, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Washington struck early and never let up in a 12-5 win over Utah at Husky Ballpark on Friday night to grab the first game of the series. In need of wins to keep their post-season hopes alive, the Huskies (25-19, 10-12 Pac) scored three times in the first and would eventually jump ahead 9-0, thanks to a five-run fifth inning.
Junior Nick Kahle bashed a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot in the seventh that would be the final dagger in the Utes (12-29, 4-21). Kahle finished the night 2-for-3 with four runs batted in, two walks and three runs scored to go along with his home runs.
In all, the Huskies battered the Utes for 14 hits and reached 10 runs or more for the 10th time this season. Ramon Bramasco led the way with three hits on the night, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
UW jumped all over Utah starter Nick Caviglia (0-2) in the first inning, doing all its damage after there were two outs. After Kahle walked and Joe Wainhouse was hit by a pitch, Bramasco extended his career-high hit streak to eight game with a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Kahle. Michael Petrie – seeing the first action of his career in right field – followed with a single to centerfield that scored two more runs.
Petrie would add an RBI single in the third inning – that came after Bramasco tripled – to make the score 4-0.
The Dawgs blew things open in the fifth inning when they sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored five times. Kahle got things started with a lead-off home run over the scoreboard beyond Utah's bullpen in left field. It was the junior catcher's seventh homer of the season and his first since April 7.
The Huskies were far from done after Kahle's blast. UW would go on to load the bases and Ben Baird and Nick Roberts would deliver run-scoring singles as the Huskies played station-to-station baseball. Braiden Ward put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run single that gave UW a 9-0 advantage.
Freshman David Rhodes (5-4) cruised through the first five innings allowing just three hits, but he ran into some trouble in the sixth. He gave up a one-out three-run home run to Erick Migueles, followed by a solo shot by Rykker Tom.
Tom's homer marked the end of the day for Rhodes. The righty from British Columbia exited after having struck out four over 5 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits and allowed the four runs – three earned – in picking up his first win since March 22 vs. USC.
Utah would score again in the seventh and even brought the tying run to the plate, but Chris Micheles got a harmless pop out to escape the jam.
Kahle put the game out of reach for good with his three-run shot in the seventh. He took Austin Moore the opposite way on a 3-1 pitch to notch his first career multi-home run game.
The series continues on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PT. It will be Craft Brew Day at Husky Ballpark.
