SEATTLE – A record number of Huskies are ready to test themselves against the best in the west this Thursday through Saturday, with coveted bids to the NCAA Outdoor Championships at stake. The penultimate meet of the season, the NCAA West Preliminary Championships are being hosted by Sacramento State at Hornet Stadium.
The West Prelims will be live streamed on Flotrack.org for a subscription cost.
Washington has 42 athletes in Sacramento for a total of 45 entries, which is tied for ninth in the NCAA for total entries in the Prelim rounds. The Huskies are tied with UCLA for second-most in the Pac-12 behind Oregon. Washington's previous high for entries in the current format was 38 in 2013.
Top-12 is the goal for all individuals and relays in Sacramento. A top-12 finish will mean continuing on to the final site of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas from June 5-8.
One Husky already advancing to Austin is sophomore Hannah Rusnak, as decathletes and heptathletes qualify straight to nationals based on their season-best scores. Rusnak will also compete in the 100m hurdles this weekend.
The NCAA Championships start with fields of 96 athletes in every individual event and 48 relays, splitting those fields into a West and East region. Forty-eight individuals in each event and 24 relays are on hand in Sacramento while the Eastern half meets this week in Jacksonville, Florida.
All individual track events from 100-meters up to the 1,500-meters will have two rounds in Sacramento, while the 3,000m steeplechase, the 5k and 10k races will have one round, and the relays will have one round as well.
Throws and horizontal jumps will take all 48 entries, broken into three or four flights based on season-bests, and give them all three attempts each, simply taking the top-12 after everyone has had three attempts. The high jump and pole vault bars will keep moving up until only 12 competitors remain.
