UW Comes Up Short In Bid To Sweep No. 15 ASU
April 28, 2019 | Baseball
Β
Carter Aldrete, Hunter Bishop and Trevor Hauver each hit two-run homersΒ to cause most of the damage for the Sun Devils, who improved to 32-10 on the season, 13-8 in Pac-12 play.
Β
The Huskies (20-18, 7-11) were able to keep up with the offensive-minded Sun Devils for much of the day before the visitors broke away late.
Β
Despite ASU's high-octane offense, UW pitchers were able to strike them out 16 times β a season high for the Huskies' pitching staff. Josh Burgmann collected nine in his five-plus innings of work to take over the Pac-12 lead with 82 for the season.Β Chris MichelesΒ recorded three in two shutout innings andΒ Jack EngerΒ collected four in two innings of work.
Β
Offensively,Β Jonathan SchifferΒ led the way for the Dawgs, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two runs scored and two runs batted in.Β Ramon BramascoΒ collected two hits and two RBI and was 8-for-14 in the series with four runs scored and four runs driven in.
Β
For the third time in the series, the Huskies jumped ahead first, this time on aΒ SchifferΒ RBI single in the first inning. Arizona State would respond quickly putting up a four-spot in the second, the big blow an opposite field homer by Aldrete.
Β
UW would answer back with a single run in its half of the inning on a run-scoring double by Bramasco, but ASU would get the run right back on a RBI ground out by Bishop after an Alika Williams lead-off triple.
Β
The Huskies continued to chip away, scoring a run in the fourth on an error and another on a sacrifice fly byΒ Braiden Ward, but ASU answered right back with a two-run shot off the batter's eye in center from Bishop.
Β
Like so many times in the series, Washington would answer back with a run, this time scoring in the fifth on an RBI groundout byΒ Joe Wainhouse. But again, ASU responded, this time a two-run homer from Hauver on Burgmann's 100thΒ pitch that made the score 9-5 and sent UW's right-hander to the bench.
Β
In the seventh, Schiffer would cut the lead to three runs with his third hit of the game, a solo home run the opposite way to right field. It was the sophomore's first homer of 2019 and the second of his career. It was also the Huskies' final hurrah, as ASU would tack on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth.
Β
Sam Romero (3-2) picked up the win for the Sun Devils and RJ Dabovich pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn his first save of 2019.
Β
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday and will host in-city rival Seattle U at Husky Ballpark. Fans will be treated to Husky Fest on Tuesday with lots of fun prizes, giveaways and special guests.
