Wainhouse Slam Sparks UW To 6-1 Win Over Seattle U
April 30, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE βΒ Joe Wainhouse hit a grand slam to jump start Washington's offense and the Huskies received an outstanding effort on the mound by freshman Diego Barrera and three relievers in a 6-1 win over Seattle University on Tuesday at Husky Ballpark.
Β
Wainhouse's slam in the third was his eighth home run of the season βΒ his third in four games β and broke a scoreless tie. His blast was the 27th of his career and moved him to 10th all-time on UW's career list. It was also the first grand slam by a Husky since Nick Kahle hit one against Coastal Carolina at last year's NCAA Conway Regional.
Β
The blast seemingly awoke UW's bats. Nick Kahle followed an inning later with a two-run double to give the Huskies a 6-0 cushion.
Β
"Being at home has been nice obviously and tonight just we really pitched," UW Coach Lindsay Meggs said. "We got two big hits β two timely hits β and pitched and played defense, and that's the recipe for winning right now in our program."
Β
Although Barrera did not qualify for the win, he was sterling in his first collegiate start. He struck out six and allowed just two hits in 4 1/3 innings. The only run he allowed was a lead-off home run by Michael Ciancio in the fifth inning. The left-hander left the game after getting a fly out on his 67th pitch of the game.
Β
From there, UW's stellar bullpen kept the score at 6-1 over the final 4 2/3 innings. Jack Enger allowed one hit and struck out two in 2 2/3 innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-0. Chris Micheles and Stevie Emanuels mopped up the rest of the game.
Β
The win puts Washington at 21-18 on the season. Seattle U fell to 9-34.
Β
The Huskies head to Pullman for the Boeing Apple Cup Series of baseball this upcoming weekend.
