Huskies Thump No. 15 Arizona State, 10-6
April 26, 2019 | Baseball
ย
The win snapped a nine-game losing streak in Pac-12 play for the Huskies (19-17, 6-10 Pac-12).
ย
Arizona State starter Alec Marsh came into Seattle with a Pac-12 best 8-1 record and was fourth with a 1.95 ERA, but Washington hitters were not intimidated. In the first inning, the first five Husky hitters reached via four hits and a walk, and before it was all said and done, they would have a 4-0 lead after the inning.
ย
The Huskies loaded the bases on a single by Mason Cerrillo, a double by Braiden Ward and a Nick Kahle walk. Connor Blair, who entered the game hitting a team-best .365 in April, following with an infield single off Spencer Torkelson's glove at first base that scored two runs. Freshman Colton Cassinelli, who like Blair is scorching in April, followed by doubling the other way into the left-field corner that scored both Kahle and Blair.
ย
Arizona State (31-9, 12-7) responded with a pair of unearned runs in the second, but Washington answered back with five runs of their own to jump ahead 9-2. Ward doubled home the first run of the inning and Blair singled home the second run to make the score 6-2. Designated hitter Joe Wainhouse punctuated the inning with a three-run bomb over the batter's eye in centerfield that seemed to put the Huskies firmly in control of the game.
ย
But the Sun Devils, who entered the weekend with the Pac-12's top scoring offense, would not roll over. They scored four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by the 14th home run of the season for Torkelson. His blast made the score 9-6 but was the last offense for either team until the Huskies scored in the eighth inning.
ย
Both teams' bullpens settled into a groove after ASU's fourth inning scoring burst, with UW stalwarts Chris Micheles and Stevie Emanuels shutting out the Sun Devils the rest of the way. Micheles, who would pick up the win to improve to 4-2 on the season, replaced David Rhodes after Torkelson's homer in the fourth inning and would cruise through 3 1/3 innings. He allowed three hits and a walk, but struck out six Sun Devils.
ย
Emanuels came into the game in the eighth and allowed a hit and struck out three over two innings. He would pick up his third save of the year.
ย
Jonathan Schiffer doubled home a run in the eighth to give UW some insurance.
ย
In all, eight of nine Husky starters would pick up a hit. Blair was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Ward was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.
ย
The teams resume the series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
