Timely Hitting Lifts Streaking Huskies To 6-3 Win Over Seattle U
March 05, 2019 | Baseball
BELLEVUE, Wash. – Strong pitching and timely hitting lifted Washington to their seventh-straight win, 6-3, over Seattle University Tuesday night at Bannerwood Ballpark in Bellevue, Wash. The Huskies (8-2) scored all their runs after two outs were recorded to provide enough offense for four UW pitchers, who combined to strike out 14 Redhawks (4-7) on the night.
Mason Cerrillo and Nick Roberts each collected two-run singles and Ben Baird had two of Washington's eight hits.
Washington jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring both runs via a passed ball. In the third inning, Baird, who led off with an infield single, came around to score when catcher Justin Mazzone couldn't corral a pitch from Will Smith (0-2). The Huskies duplicated the feat in the fifth inning when Cerrillo walked to lead off the inning and scored later via another passed ball.
The Huskies increased their lead to 4-0 in the sixth on a two-out hit by Cerrillo. With Joe Wainhouse and Connor Blair in scoring position, Cerrillo laced a single into left-center for his ninth and 10th RBIs of the season.
After a two-run homer by Redhawks first baseman Matt Boissoneault cut the Huskies lead in half, Roberts extended it back to four runs, 6-2, with a bases-loaded single to left field.
Seattle U scored in the ninth to make it 6-3, but Stevie Emanuels struck out Jason Harayda to end the game and seal the Huskies seventh-straight win.
Jack DeCooman threw the first three innings, striking out four and allowing three hits and a walk.
Jack Enger came on in the fourth and threw two shutout innings to pick up his first career win. He struck out three and did not allow a hit.
Chris Micheles surrendered the two-run homer in the seventh, but struck out five in another stellar performance.
The Huskies return to action this weekend for the Seattle Baseball Showcase, Friday through Sunday at T-Mobile Park. UW opens up Friday against Indiana at 7:00 p.m.
