GM 2: Dominant Burgmann K's 11 As Huskies Sweep Bears
February 23, 2019 | Baseball
PHOENIX, Ariz.ย โย Washington scored five runs in the fourth inning, which proved to be plenty of offense to back a dominant pitching performance by sophomore Josh Burgmann in a 11-1 win over Northern Colorado in game two of a doubleheader at GCU Ballpark on Saturday.
ย
The win gave the Huskies (4-2) a sweep of both the double header and three-game series over the Bears (0-6). UW won game one of the twin bill, 3-2, on a walk-off sacrifice fly.ย
The double header marked the end of a season-opening road trip that saw the Huskies spend the better part of two weeks away from Seattle.
"It was a long road trip," said 10th-year Washington Coach Lindsay Meggs. "Besides the wins, I think the best part about this is it makes our guys really appreciate what we have back home at Husky Ballpark. With all the things we had to do to get the field ready, it was rewarding to be able to come out and play and win three games."
ย
Burgmann (1-0) set new career highs in both innings pitched and strikeouts. The right-hander from Nanaimo, British Columbia, fanned 11 in a complete-game, seven inning masterpiece and struck out at least one batter in each inning.
ย
He also showed pinpoint command, as he did not walk a batter and scattered eight hits, allowing just a lone earned run.
ย
"Burgy was really good," saidย Meggs. "He minimized the second, gave up the one run, and kept it at one."
ย
Washington jumped ahead of Northern Colorado in the first inning on a fielder's choice RBI groundout by Nick Kahle, but the Bears came back and tied it back up in the top of the second on three-consecutive singles.
ย
From there, it was all Huskies the rest of the way. The score remained 1-1 until the Huskies' sent 11 batters to the plate and erupted for a five-spot in the fourth inning, keyed by big hits from the bottom of the order.
ย
No. 7 hitter Nick Roberts gave UW a 2-1 lead with a RBI single and Noah Hsue followed with a double over the center fielder's head that scored a pair of runs. Catcher Michael Petrie capped the scoring by driving in two with a single just out of the reach of the leaping shortstop's glove for the first RBIs of his career.
ย
The offense poured it on after the fourth inning, scoring runs in each of the final four innings, before eventually 10-run ruling the Bears.
ย
Connor Blair had as solo home run in the fifth and Kahle and Braiden Ward had RBIs in the sixth before the Huskies put the game away in the seventh.
ย
Mason Cerrillo drove in the 10th run of the ball game with a RBI single and the game ended when Petrie grounded into a double play that scored Cerrillo to give the Huskies a 10-run advantage.
ย
The Huskies outhit the Bears, 9-8, in the night cap, led by two hits each from Ward and Kahle.
ย
Washington returns home to face Cal Poly in a three-game series at Husky Stadium, March 1-3.
