Two First-Half Goals Carry Huskies To Win In Corvallis
October 18, 2019 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Two first half goals on a wet night carried the #25 Washington Huskies to a 2-1 win over the Oregon State Beavers. Washington moves to 5-1-0 in Pac-12 with the win and have now won three in a row and seven of its last eight.
Ameera Hussen and Kennedy Smith both scored in the first half to give the Huskies the cushion they needed, with Olivia van der Jagt, Summer Yates, and Sianna Siemonsma earning assists in the game. In net, Siena Ruelas was her usual reliable self, making five saves total and four in the second half to protect the lead.
The long ball was Washington's friend in the first half. In addition to Hussen's goal coming off a beautiful initial long pass, both Yates and van der Jagt managed dangerous shots that came from passes from the defensive half. The rest of the first half was mostly fought in the midfield as the Huskies allowed almost no scoring chances, with Ruelas cleaning up what few there were.
Washington's offense upped its ball possession early in the second half, only for Oregon State to get a goal back on one of its few forays into the box. The Beavers had the run of play after that goal but Washington weathered the storm with a number of controlling runs down the wings.
Three straight corners in the 82nd minute came close to netting an insurance goal for the Huskies, only for the ball to be cleared away just in time on each attempt. A free kick a minute later saw Yates get behind the defense but get to the ball barely after the keeper, who was able to handle it.

Just beautiful work from Reischling and Siemonsma before Smith finds the redirect!
