Late Goal Goes Against Huskies In 1-0 Loss
October 24, 2019 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The Washington Huskies lost for just the second time in Pac-12 play, falling 1-0 to the #18 UCLA Bruins in a nail-biter. The game was scoreless until the 87th minute, when UCLA scored following a series of corners by the home team. Washington is 9-4-2 now and 5-2-0 in Pac-12 play, tied for second in the conference.
The Huskies began the game pressuring UCLA high, forcing turnovers repeatedly on rushed passes and dribbles to keep the ball in the attacking half. The most dangerous scoring chance of the scoreless first half came on another high turnover by UCLA, with the ensuing foul just outside the box leading to a hard Summer Yates free kick caught by the keeper. Olivia van der Jagt's steal in the middle of the attacking half less than a minute later gave Yates another chance, this time from a sharp angle saved.
Washington was out-possessed through the first 20 minutes of the second half but didn't face any real scoring chances as the defense kept everything in front of it. Karlee Stueckle's insertion late in the second half brought some energy that nearly won Washington a corner, then nearly brought a goal when Yates' through ball left Stueckle alone with the keeper but was just out of reach.
The game would be decided late. UCLA managed four corner kicks in a minute-long span, eventually scoring to take the game. The Huskies could not get enough of an offensive push to tie it up in the dying moments as UCLA pounded the ball into the corner.
