SEATTLE - The second week of the season brings about the start of a new four-year series for the 13th-ranked Husky volleyball team, as UW plays host to a new installment of the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge. For the next four seasons, Washington and Colorado will represent the Pac-12 and go up against Illinois and Iowa out of the Big Ten with the host site rotating among the four each year. The series starts in Seattle this Friday and Saturday, with Colorado playing at 5 p.m. each evening and the Huskies going at 8 p.m., starting with Iowa on Friday night and then 11th-ranked Illinois on Saturday night.
All four matches of the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks, the first appearance on TV for the Dawgs this season.
Three of the four teams in Alaska Airlines Arena this week are ranked in the AVCA Top-25, with the Fighting Illini at No. 11, the Huskies moving up four spots to No. 13 this week, and Colorado coming in at No. 21.
Washington is off to a 2-0 start with impressive 3-1 and 3-0 wins over then-No. 14 San Diego last week. But now they will have an even tougher test in the Big Ten opposition as the Pac-12 and Big Ten have been the clear top conferences in college volleyball in recent years. Both matches should show a style and level of play that the Huskies will see during the Pac-12 season and into postseason.
Iowa and Washington have only met once before, way back in 1991, a 3-0 win for the Huskies in Seattle. The Hawkeyes started 2-1 with wins over SMU and Belmont and a close five set loss to Lipscomb. Last year Iowa was 18-15 overall and 7-13 in Big Ten play getting big wins over Ohio State twice, and Michigan. Senior outside hitter Taylor Louis was named Preseason All-Big Ten and through three matches she is hitting .345 with 4.17 kills per set. Senior Reghan Coyle and junior Meghan Buzzerio both had 29 kills each so far. Sophomore Brie Orr sets the offense which is hitting .251 and holding opponents to .135. Freshman Hannah Clayton has already put up 18.0 blocks in three matches.
Against Illinois, the Huskies will get a chance for some revenge, albeit with a very different roster than the last time the teams faced. Illinois upset UW in five sets in the NCAA second round last year, ending UW's streak of five straight Sweet 16 appearances. Illinois returned every starter except its libero this season. Senior setter Jordyn Poulter and senior middle blocker Ali Bastianelli were both named AVCA Third Team All-Americans last year. Bastianelli averaged 1.60 blocks per set last year and led the NCAA as a sophomore with 1.79. Jacqueline Quade is leading Illinois thus far with 4.54 kills per set hitting .282 and sophomore libero Morgan O'Brien is averaging 4.62 digs per set. Illinois now has a 2-1 lead in the all-time series.
