Huskies Can’t Hold 3-0 Lead, Fall 7-3 To No. 11 Bruins

SEATTLE – Washington had numerous opportunities to score early against 11th-ranked UCLA, but ultimately they could not cash in enough times on its chances and fell, 7-3, in the opening game of an important three-game series at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies (23-21, 13-9 Pac-12) entered the Friday night's game one back of UCLA (31-14, 15-7) in the Pac-12 standings and looked poised to jump all over the Bruins in the early going. They had runners in scoring position in each of the first five innings, but were only able to get on the scoreboard against UCLA starter Jake Bird (6-3), the Pac-12's second-ranked pitcher in terms of ERA, in the fourth inning.
After AJ Graffanino walked and Christian Jones singled in the fourth, Jonathan Schiffer hit a double that the left fielder, Jake Pries, had a tough time judging with the sunlight directly in his eyes. Graffanino was able to score on the play to break the ice.
Braiden Ward made it 3-0, serving a two-out single into right field that scored both Jones and Schiffer.
The lead was short-lived, though, as UCLA would score in each of the next four innings to take a lead that they never relinquished.
The Bruins strung together a couple of singles in the fifth, setting the table for Gig Harbor, Wash., native Michael Toglia. The first baseman took a 2-2 pitch from Lucas Knowles (3-5) the other way and just out of Jones' reach in right field for his 10th homer of the season – this one equalizing the game at 3-3.
UCLA took the lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by catcher Daniel Rosica that was charged to Knowles and added to its advantage on a Jack Stronach single in the seventh that made the score 5-3.
The Bruins added two more runs in the eighth and turned the game over to their stellar bullpen with a 7-3 lead. Three relievers combined to throw 2 2/3 hitless and scoreless innings to close the door on any hopes of a UW rally.
Mason Cerrillo was 2-for-5 to lead UW's offense, which managed eight hits – all off Bird.
Graffanino reached base three times and was 1-for-2 at the plate in just his second game due to a hamstring injury on March 4.
The Huskies and Bruins continue the series on Saturday with a 2:05 p.m. game. It will be Craft Brew Day at Husky Ballpark.
