SEATTLE - The Huskies (23-20, 13-8 Pac-12) return home winners in four of their last five games and are 6-3 over their last nine. They will entertain the 11th-ranked UCLA Bruins (30-14, 14-7), who are on a current four-game losing skid, but prior to that had won eight-straight games.
The Huskies (4th) and Bruins (3rd) are tightly packed in the Pac-12 race, so a lot is on the line this weekend. The Huskies are going for their third-consecutive series win - which would be a first against UCLA. If they accomplish a series win, UW would be no worse than tied in the Pac-12 standings with UCLA.
Besides the games on the field, Husky Ballpark will play host to several popular promotions. Saturday is Craft Brew Day and a Mother's Day Brunch will be held prior to Sunday's game.
The action at the park will be live streamed this weekend, with links found on GoHuskies.com. The action on Friday will be called by Shane Lantz, and Bill Abelson will provide coverage Saturday and Sunday. Constant game updates will be tweeted @UW_Baseball and fans can find all links at GoHuskies.com.
LAST WEEK
UW took two of three against Arizona State at Phoenix Municipal Stadium this past weekend. They led 2-0 before eventually falling, 4-3, on a walk-off double. The Huskies rebounded with a 7-3 win in game two. Joe Wainhouse helped the Huskies jump out to a 4-0 lead by the third inning, driving all four runs in, including a three-run homer. Joe DeMers pitched 6.1 innings to pick up the win. In Sunday's rubber match, the Huskies jumped to a 5-0 lead and had to hold on for a 7-6 win. Jordan Jones pitched 6.2 innings to earn the win. Wainhouse once again was the offensive hero, hitting a 2-run, 9th inning homer to give the Huskies a 7-4 lead. Wainhouse was 4-for-12 with 2 HR and 7 RBI in the series. Braiden Ward was 5-for-10 and Mason Cerrillo was 5-for-12 in the series.
SERIES HISTORY VS. UCLA
The Bruins hold the all-time series advantage over UW, 48-22. Last season, the Huskies won their second consecutive series against the Bruins. It marked the third time in team history the Huskies have won back-to-back series against the Bruins (also, 2002-03 and 2005-06). The Huskies have never won three-consecutive season series against UCLA. Last year, UW won its first series in L.A. against the Bruins since 2005. Coach Lindsay Meggs, who played for UCLA from 1980-83 and was Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 in 1983, is 6-18 against his alma mater since taking over at UW in 2010. He started 0-14 against the Bruins before winning the final game of the 2014 series. Since that 0-14 stretch, the Huskies are 6-4 against the Bruins.
TEAM NOTES:
• Braiden Ward enters the weekend tied for the Pac-12 lead with 12 stolen bases. His total is the most by a UW freshman since Chris Magruder swiped 18 in 1996.
• Nick Kahle ranks third in the Pac-12 with 17 doubles. That is the most doubles by any player since Curt Rindal hit 21 in 2007 and the second most ever by a UW catcher, trailing Dominic Woody, who had 22 in 1999.
• Junior Mason Cerrillo ranks sixth in the Pac-12 with a .371 average. He is on pace for the highest average by a Husky since Matt Hague hit .381 in 2006. Cerrillo has hit in 11-straight games and has a chance to equal the season high by any Husky if he can get a hit in his next game.
• Senior Joe Wainhouse has hit eight home runs this season while the rest of the team has combined for nine.
• Sophomore Nick Kahle, a late add to the Johnny Bench Watch list, has caught 372.2 of 388.2 innings (96%) behind the plate.
• Alex Hardy is ranks first in Pac-12 play with an ERA of 1.44 and opposing batting average against of .195. The fifth-year senior is also climbing UW's record books, ranking 9th all-time with 65 career appearances.
• Joe DeMers has made 41 career starts, and is tied with Jeff Heaverlo for 5th most in UW history. He also became just the 10th player in UW history to pitch in 250+ innings and will move up the top-10 list (pg. 9 of notes) over the next three weeks.
• With 10 games left in the regular season, Levi Jordan needs to play in eight to become the ninth Huskies to play in 200 games.
