Big First Inning, Five Home Runs Carry UW To 13-6 Win Over UCLA
May 12, 2018 | Baseball
Β
Joe Wainhouse and Levi Jordan each had a pair of home runs and Nick Kahle added a solo shot, part of a season-high 18 hit day for Washington (24-21, 14-9 Pac-12) as they evened the series against UCLA (31-15, 15-8).
Β
Wainhouse went 4-for-5 with five RBI and four runs scored, while Jordan was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Freshmen Braiden Ward and Jonathan Schiffer both had a season-high three hits.
Β
Junior ace Joe DeMers (5-3) was the recipient of all the run support. He cruised through eight innings of work, allowing two earned runs on seven hits β only two of which came after the third inning. He also struck out six and picked up his fifth win of the year.
Β
The offensive support definitely eased some of the pressure on DeMers, as he felt that the game was crucial for the Huskies' post-season hopes.
Β
"Today was a must-win for sure," DeMers said. "But, I love that pressure. I've always loved pitching in those big games, so I took it upon myself and pitched my heart out, so I'm glad we came out with the win."
Β
The UW bats came out on fire in the first inning as they batted around against UCLA freshman starter Zach Pettway (7-3) and gave DeMers an early 4-0 cushion to work with. The Huskies had six hits in the inning and woke the Bruins' bullpen early.
Β
After Mason Cerrillo greeted Pettway with a lead-off single to extend his hit streak to a Husky high 13 games, Ward faked a bunt and instead tripled into the right-center gap for a quick 1-0 lead.
Β
Wainhouse drove Ward home with a double, and after a Jordan single, he scored on a Willie MacIver single that made the score 3-0. Jordan was the final run of the inning, scoring on a single by No. 8 hitter Schiffer.
Β
Staked to a 4-0 lead, DeMers was able to pitch free and easy, not panicking when he got into a couple of jams. He tried to groove fastballs by UCLA with the lead, but the Bruins were aggressive, causing him to rethink his strategy.
Β
"I was trying to throw just fastballs, but there were all over that, so I had to start throwing breaking balls like it was any other game, and I just treated it like it was a 0-0 game the whole time," DeMers said.
Β
He did allow a two-run single to Chase Strumpf in the third, but that's all DeMers would give up. From there, the Husky offense took over.
Β
The Huskies' power surge started in the fifth and would continue until their final at bats in the eighth inning.
Β
Wainhouse blasted a three-run homer in the fifth, his ninth of the season, to give the Huskies a 7-2 advantage, but it was just the start of things to come.
Β
In the sixth, the Huskies tacked on three more runs, all after there were two outs, on home runs by Kahle and Jordan. Kahle went the other way to right field off of Michael Townsend for his first home run of the season and after Wainhouse followed with an infield, Jordan went deep to dead center for his fifth long ball of the year.
Β
Wainhouse and Jordan led off the eighth with back-to-back home runs to make the score 12-3. For Wainhouse, it was his first multi-home run game of the year and gave him 10 for the season. He is the first Husky to reach double-digit blasts in a season since Pierce Rankin had 10 in 2010.
Β
Jordan upped his season total to six home runs on the year.
Β
"It was sweet, especially when we had Joe throwing," Wainhouse said of the Huskies' offensive surge. "When we have DeMers up there and we get a four spot in the first, we were like, 'All right, this is going to be a good game.' Β The wind was blowing out today, and we knew he would do what he could, but balls are going to fly today so it was good for us to keep picking up runs and just letting him have an easy day on the mound, roll through some innings, and get a win."
Β
The Huskies added their 13th and final run on a RBI single by Cerrillo.
Β
UCLA struck for four runs in the ninth off reliever Jack DeCooman, the big blow a three-run homer by Michael Toglia, but it was too little, too late for the visitors from LA.
Β
The Huskies and Bruins continue the series on Sunday with a rubber match, slated for a 1:05 first pitch.
