Huskies Make Early Runs Stick In 2-1 Win Over Ducks
April 13, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE βΒ Washington scored a pair of runs in the first inning and held on to win behind an outstanding effort on the hill from four different pitchers in a 2-1 victory over Oregon Friday at Husky Ballpark.
Β
Both teams fought through a rainy and blustery day at the park, but it was Washington (16-14, 7-3 Pac-12) that was able to endure the longest. Β The Huskies had been struggling to score early in games this season, but on Friday they took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, just the fifth time this year that they have scored in the opening frame.
Β
Lead-off hitter Mason Cerrillo accounted for the first run, walking and eventually scoring on a wild pitch by Oregon (18-14, 5-8) ace Matt Mercer. Third baseman Willie MacIver drove home the other run on a two-out single to left field that scored Nick KahleΒ -- who singled earlier -- from second base.
Β
For MacIver, it was part of a team-best 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Β
Oregon wasted little time in getting a run back when first baseman Gabe Matthews led off the second inning with a home run. Matthews lifted a 1-0 pitch from UW starter Lucas Knowles the other way and into the wind that was blowing out to left field for his third homer of the season.
Β
That early stretched accounted for all the offense as both pitching staffs hunkered down after the second inning.
Β
Knowles (2-3) went the first 5 1/3 innings, scattering six hits and striking out four. He was able to pick up his second win of the year after getting some tough luck losses and no decisions over his previous six starts.
Β
Stevie Emanuels threw a hitless 2/3 of an inning, Alex Hardy allowed one hit over two innings and Joe DeMers pitched a perfect ninth inning to make the Huskies one-run lead stand.
Β
For DeMers, it was just his second career relief appearance and his first career save. He was scheduled to start Saturday, but will now take the ball on Sunday instead.
Β
On the other side, Mercer (4-3) came one out away from throwing a complete game. He gave up six hits, walked three and struck out eight over 7 2/3 innings, but was saddled with the tough-luck loss.
Β
Matthews (3-for-3, HR, 2 2B) accounted for three of the Ducks seven hits.
Β
Washington was kept to six hits, led by MacIver's two.
Β
The teams continue the series Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. The game will be carried on the Pac-12 Network.
