Huskies Comeback Twice Before Falling 6-4 In 13 Innings To Ducks
April 15, 2018 | Baseball
Late defensive replacement Braden Stutzman singled with the bases loaded off of UW reliever Dylan Lamb to send a pair of Oregon runners home and give the Ducks (19-14, 6-8 Pac-12) a cushion the Huskies (16-15, 7-4) ultimately couldn't overcome.
The Huskies came back twice late in the game to prolong what would turn out to be a four-hour, 48 minute affair.
Trailing 3-1 in the eighth, Levi Jordan blasted a home run that eventually force extra innings. He tied the game again in the 11th on a sacrifice fly after the Ducks once again took the lead.
Jordan was 1-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
UW ace Joe DeMers gutted through the first eight innings, but it was not an easy outing for the normally steady junior. Oregon had a runner in scoring position in seven of DeMers' eight innings but could never deliver the knock-out blow. The Ducks jumped ahead in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Jakob Goldfarb and added a second run on a Jonny DeLuca RBI single in the second inning.
Gabe Matthews capped the scoring for Oregon off DeMers with a solo home run in the fifth inning, the first home run allowed this season by him all season.
The Huskies scored a run off Oregon starter Yovan Kenyon in the first on a Joe Wainhouse RBI single, but the sophomore settled down from there until finding trouble in the eighth inning. The right-hander had set the Huskies down in order in four-straight innings before issuing a lead-off walk to pinch hitter KJ Brady in the eighth inning. Jordan followed by taking a 2-2 pitch the other way over the right field wall for a two-run home run. For Jordan, it was his team-leading fourth blast of the year and more importantly, gave the Huskies new life.
The Ducks re-took the lead in the 11th inning on a Jonny DeLuca lead-off home run, but Washington was able to claw back and tie the score. Jordan again came up clutch for the Dawgs lifting a fly ball to right field that proved just deep enough to allow Kaiser Weiss to scamper home ahead of the throw from Taylor Travess.
But, Washington's offense was stymied by the Ducks bullpen from there and were unable to capitalize on several opportunities.
Ryan Nelson pitched the final three innings for the Ducks to earn his first win of the year.
Leo Nierenberg (0-3) was saddled with the loss.
