Jones, Burgmann Combine To Shutout Ducks, 4-0
April 15, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE โย Jordan Jones threw the first 5 1/3 innings and Josh Burgmann the final 3 2/3 innings as the Huskies shutout Oregon, 4-0, to earn a split of a double header and a 2-1 series victory over the Ducks.
ย
The win pushed the Huskies (17-15, 8-4 Pac-12) into sole possession of third in the Pac-12 standings. The Ducks (19-15, 6-9) fall into a three-way tie for seventh in the Conference race.
ย
Jones (4-3), who was fighting the stomach flu and did not arrive at the ballpark until the eighth inning of game one of the double header, shook off his illness and held the Ducks to five hits. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter before handing the ball off to Burgmann with a 2-0 lead.
ย
Burgmann got the final 11 outs allowing four hits and walk, while striking out four Oregon hitters. He picked up his second career save and first of the 2018 season.
ย
The Huskies needed everything they got from Jones and Burgmann after losing a heart-breaking 6-4 decision in 13 innings earlier in the day.
ย
"Our bullpen was pretty depleted, and we needed both those guys to eat up some innings," Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs said after his team completed nearly eight hours of baseball.
ย
"We weren't sure if [Jones] ย was going to be able to take the ball, but he did his thing. We didn't use Burgmann in the first game because we knew we'd need him on the back end of the second game and they both did a great job."
ย
The offense helped relieve some of the pressure too, scoring in the second inning and building from there. Washington was able to piece together three-straight hits after there were two outs to give Jones a 1-0 lead.
ย
Christian Jones got things going with a double and Kaiser Weiss kept up the pressure with an infield single. Braiden Ward struck pay dirt for the Dawgs finding a hole in the infield for a RBI single.
ย
The Huskies added on to their lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth to go up 3-0.
ย
Nick Kahle gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead in the fifth with a RBI single that scored Mason Cerrillo, who doubled to open the inning.
ย
Joe Wainhouse followed in the next inning with a solo home on the first pitch he saw from James Acuna. For Wainhouse, it was his fourth homer of the season and the second ball in a week that he put over the batter's eye in center field.
ย
The Huskies got some insurance in the eighth with a fourth run. Freshman Kaiser Weiss, who was 3-for-4 in the game, was safe on a fielding error at short and hustled to second when the ball rolled just out of reach into the outfield. With two outs, fellow freshman Noah Hsue delivered a clutch single that scored Weiss.
ย
Oregon tried to rally in the ninth, putting two runners on the bases with singles, but Burgmann got Taylor Travess to tap back to the mound for the final out.
ย
The Huskies ended up with 11 hits in game two.
ย
Kahle was 2-for-4, after going 3-for-6 in game one of the doubleheader. The sophomore caught all 22 innings behind the plate for the Diamond Dawgs.
ย
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference game against Seattle University at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue before resuming Pac-12 action. The Huskies will travel to Berkley, Calif., and face the Cal Bears for three games starting on Friday.
