Cal Leads From Start To Finish In 11-4 Win Over UW

Eight of nine Washington starters had at least one hit on the night, but every Cal (22-13, 8-8 Pac-12) starter had a hit and the Huskies (17-16, 8-5) committed four errors defensively to help the Bears' cause.

Tyus Greene set the tone for Cal taking the very first pitch of the game from Lucas Knowles (2-4) out of the park for a lead-off home run. It was part of a four-run first inning for the Bears in which the final three runs were unearned.

After Greene's homer, the Bears would go on to load the bases before an out was recorded, and every one of those base runners would eventually score. Two scored on errors and the third scored on a RBI single by Darren Baker for a 4-0 lead.

The Huskies' bats came to life in the fourth inning as they strung together five hits and scored three times to make it a one-run ball game, 4-3. Joe Wainhouse drove in the first run with a RBI single, Jonathan Schiffer drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly and Braiden Ward smacked a two-out, RBI single for the third run.

It would be the closest the Huskies would get as Cal responded with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to extend its lead to 8-3.

Wainhouse got a run back in the seventh inning on a two-out RBI single, part of a 2-for-4, two RBI night, but California would get that run back in the seventh and two more in the eighth for the final score of 11-4.

Zayne Patino (3-1) entered the game in relief in the fifth and went 2 2/3 innings to earn the win for Cal.

The two teams return to the ballpark Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Washington and Pac-12 Bay Area.
