March 24, 2018 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – No. 1 Oregon State gutted out a 5-2 win in game two of a doubleheader Saturday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore., to claim a sweep and series victory over Washington.
After getting beat 16-1 in the first game of the double header, the Huskies (10-10, 3-2 Pac-12) turned to their ace Joe DeMers to lead a bounce back. But, Oregon State (20-1, 5-0) showed why they are No. 1 in the nation, scratching out five runs off the Pac-12's leader in ERA entering the weekend.
Oregon State struck for three runs – one unearned – in the second to jump to a 3-0 lead against DeMers (1-1) and the Huskies. Jack Anderson tripled to start the inning and scored on a Tyler Malone single. With two outs, Malone and Zack Zalesky, who was by a pitch, advanced to second and third on a passed ball and both scored on the next pitch when Steven Kwan singled past a diving Levi Jordan at shortstop.
The Beavers added another run to their total in the fourth inning when Andy Armstrong came up with a two-out single to score Michael Gretler. That run made the score 4-0, before the Huskies were finally able to get on track offensively.
In the Huskies' half of the fifth, Ben Baird and Joe Wainhouse started the inning with back-to-back-doubles off of Bryce Fehmel for the Huskies first run. Jonathan Schiffer singled home Wainhouse to cut the Beavers' lead in half, 4-2.
The Huskies would go on to load the bases with just one out, but reliever Brandon Eisert (3-1) induced an inning-ending double play from Levi Jordan to keep the game at 4-2. That proved to be the last solid scoring threat for the Huskies on the night.
The score remained 4-2 until the seventh when OSU mounted a two-out rally. Cadyn Grenier singled and was able to score on an Adley Rutschman double. After an intentional walk, DeMers' day was done.
The junior righty scattered 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings and gave up four earned runs in his first start in over two weeks. He gutted out 122 pitches in his return to action.
Oregon State outhit Washington, 10-8. Wainhouse was the only Husky with multiple hits, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a RBI.
The two teams wrap up the series Sunday with a scheduled 3:00 p.m. first pitch. The game will be telecast on the Pac-12 Network.
