CORVALLIS, Ore. – Washington salvaged the final game of a three-game series versus No. 1 Oregon State, beating the Beavers, 8-4, Sunday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. The win improved the Huskies to 11-10 overall, but more importantly, 4-2 in Pac-12 play.
The Huskies' handed the Beavers (20-2, 5-1 Pac-12) just their second loss of the season and snapped their 15-game win streak in Pac-12 play.
"I'm just happy for our guys," Coach Lindsay Meggs said. "We're a little beat up and we were short-handed today. That is a great team, so this is a good win for us."
The Huskies used a balanced offensive attack, spreading out 13 hits among eight different starters. Also, eight different players scored a run for the visiting Huskies.
Joe Wainhouse was 2-for-5 with three runs batted in, including his second home run of the season. Christian Jones, Jonathan Schiffer, Kaiser Weiss and Noah Hsue each had two hits.
Oregon State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning off UW starter Jordan Jones on a RBI single by first baseman Zak Taylor, but the Huskies answered back in the third to take the lead for good. KJ Brady started the inning with a double, was balked to third base and scored on a Levi Jordan groundout to tie the game at 1-1.
After OSU starter Grant Gambrell (3-1) walked Nick Kahle, his day was done after just 2 1/3 innings. Reliever Jordan Britton struck out the first batter he faced before giving up a single to Schiffer, followed by a triple by Jones that scored two runs and gave the Huskies its first lead of the series, 3-1. It was the first of several hits under pressure by the Huskies that led them to victory.
The Huskies increased their lead to 5-1 one inning later in the fourth on a clutch hit by Wainhouse. With the bases loaded and behind in the count 0-2, Beavers' reliever Kevin Abel spun a breaking ball in the middle of the zone that Wainhouse hammered into right field for a two-run single.
Oregon State came up with a couple of two-out hits in the fourth to get the two runs back. Taylor singled home the first run and No. 9 hitter Andy Armstrong doubled into the left-center gap to score Taylor and make it a 5-3 game.
Washington was able to answer back in the seventh to go back up by four runs. They loaded the bases off Abel and were able to push a pair of runs across the plate against Jake Mullholland. Jones scored the first run on an errant pick-off throw to first base and Noah Hsue pushed across the Huskies' seventh run on a suicide squeeze bunt that he beat out for an infield single.
Jordan Jones went five innings, scattering seven hits, walking one and giving up two earned runs out of three that were scored off of him. He improved to 3-2 on the season.
Although he wasn't as dominate as he had been in several previous performances, he set the tone on the hill in an important ball game that the Huskies needed. Jones was followed on the hill by Josh Burgmann, who was making his first appearance since March 22, 2017. Just over a year after injuring his arm, the redshirt sophomore allowed an unearned run on one hit over two innings.
The unearned run off Burgmann came in the Beavers' seventh, and the Huskies got the run right back in the eighth. Wainhouse took and 0-2 pitch from Mullholland and delivered it into the top row of seats beyond the right-field wall for the Huskies final run.
Senior Alex Hardy came into the game to start the eighth and retired the Beavers' potent offense in order twice to secure the victory.
Next up for the Huskies is a three-game series, Thursday through Saturday against USC in Los Angeles.
