Late Homer Sinks Huskies At USC, 1-0
March 29, 2018 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES Β β Β Angelo Armenta hit his first career home run in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie and three USC pitchers combined to shutout the Huskies, 1-0, Thursday night at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles.
Β
Armenta led off the eighth inning by taking a 1-2 pitch from UW reliever Josh Burgmann (0-1) into the trees in right field for the only run of the game.
Β
The Huskies (11-11, 4-3 Pac-12) would put runners on the corners with one out in the ninth inning, but Connor Lunn struck out pinch-hitter Jonathan Schiffer and got Braiden Ward to ground out to preserve the win for USC (13-9, 3-4).
Β
Lunn picked up his eighth save of the season and made a winner out of reliever Brian Gursky (2-0).
Β
The starters for both teams pitched well before they exited without allowing a run. Husky starter Lucas Knowles bounced back from a rough outing in his last start against No. 1 Oregon State by throwing six shutout innings and scattering four hits and four walks in his fifth start of the season.
Β
The redshirt-freshman pitched stress-free for most of the night. USC's best threat against Knowles came in the fourth inning when the Trojans had runners on the corners with one out. Knowles got Blake Sobol swinging for one of his five strikeouts on the night and Kaleb Muphy to fly out to leave the go-ahead run stranded at third.
Β
Trojans' starter Kyle Hurt was equally impressive, not allowing a UW hit after KJ Brady led off the third with a double. Brady eventually was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice grounder, representing the Huskies best chance to score in the game until the ninth inning.
Β
Hurt ended up mixing three hits and three walks over seven scoreless innings. The freshman, who earlier this season pitched a combined no hitter, struck out eight Huskies batters.
Β
Both teams had five hits on the night. Nick Kahle was 2-for-4, while Christian Jones had a ninth-inning single to extend his hit streak to eight games.
Β
The two teams will play the second game of the series on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PT.
